Lakers coach says Gasol goaltended

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Two days later, Phil Jackson called goaltending on his own center.

An hour before tip-off of Game 3 of the NBA Finals, Jackson said Los Angeles center Pau Gasol should have been whistled for goaltending on Orlando rookie guard Courtney Lee's missed layup in the final second of regulation in Game 2 on Sunday night.

I think Phil Jackson is wrong, according to the rule cited the other day.  So long as the rim / backboard doesn't move, and the ball isn't touching the rim, it's not basket interference / goal-tending in the NBA.  The officials got this one right.

I don't think anyone said he was a genius, they just said he was playing mindgames (which I agree with).  It doesn't mean they actually work.

But that doesn't mean he doesn't play mind games.  He does, or at least he tries to.  It's all he has going for him, really.

What's sad is that SVG did a better job playing mind games--will Jameer play or won't he?--but SVG then botched the Jameer thing in game 1 (too many minutes).

I heard the way the announcers explained what the goal tending rule is. That touching it has to interfere with the ball, etc. The thing is though, that rule needs further review. In this case, if Gasol isnt allowed to come into contact with the rim then he has to play either much more conservatively in relation to how high up he goes or he has to play a little farther away from the rim in order to be sure he doesnt ocme in contact with it. Either way it makes the shot easier for the offense and in this case it may have made the difference.

Jackson's mind games are never ending. 

The Lakers actually lost to the Celtics by 40 last season in game 6 on purpose, so the league would underestimate them this year.

Exactly, it changes the play depending on how Gasol acts. Maybe he shakes the backboard a bit (shot was off enough to doubt that) but maybe he affected Lee in a way where he changed the shot at the last second to avoid what Gasol had done and therefor missed. But Gasol clearly hits the basket.

Hmmm when you have Jordan win you 6 championships, and Kobe-Shaq win you 3 championships, I guess that means he's the greatest coach alive....Jackson is a living breathing leech who's full of more ***t then a cesspool. He's a joke.

i'm starting to wonder if the lakers would be better off with a c different coach. someone to fire them up. jackson SEEMS(maybe different off camera)like he does'nt want it as much as ..well.. any coach or player. this could be viewed as him being cool headed but to me, it comes off as "ya win some,you lose some." maybe that's bing mature but i don't believe it helps you win. i think it does just the opposite.
