Why we should look at Gortat

Gortat would be the perfect fit at backup for Perk, and here's my reasoning:

1.) We wouldn't lose a great deal of what Perk brings to the game, mainly solid interior defense (one on one and team D) and fundamental rebounding/finishing near the rim.  So many times this postseason when Perk left the game, the interior defense sputtered, and other teams were able to work inside. Especially with the Lakers being as big as they are, and with Howard who will only get tougher for Perk in the coming years.

2.) Could you imagine twin-tower tandoms of Perk-KG, KG-Gortat, OR Gortat-Perk. These twosomes would wreak havoc on any penetration, and also hold in check big time big men like Howard etc.

3.) Gortat is only 25, and doesn't seem the type to slack off.  He is a workman, someone who punches his timeclock when he steps on the court, without much complaining or talking.

For those of you who have been preaching Sheed, I would preach the exact opposite, which is Marcin Gortat.  This guys is the real deal on D and rebounding, and is the consummate backup Center.  I'm sure he'll want more than the MLE has to offer, but he's worth taking a gander, because I believe he would fit so well in this system.

At a reasonable price, I'd love to have Gortat on this roster, for exactly the reasons you mentioned (and welcome aboard, by the way).  But...

...I can't see it being at a "reasonable price" because I think Gortat will be looking for starter money, or close to it...

..and that's because I expect him to look for a situation where he will be either an immediate starter or someone with a chance to start in relatively short order.  The C's don't fit the bill.

I think he's a pipe dream - but I'd love to have you tell me you told me so over the next few months when he's in green at a bargain price...

Here's what their GM said:

He's got the best job in America, playing behind my best player, playing 8 to 10 minutes," Magic General Manager Otis Smith told the Post. "He goes out and does his job and probably has the best work ethic of anyone in the locker room. Can he start for another team? Yeah, he can.

"I'll just deal with it and the market will dictate where he goes. I would like to keep him on our team, but it depends if someone wants to make him a starter and figures out what's my breaking point.

"I'm sure teams will make a run for him."

So, it sounds like they'll match up to a certain point, but at a certain price they've decided to let him walk.

I think he'll be looking for more minutes and money.  We can offer more than he's currently getting BUT I think other teams can do more money and more importantly to him more minutes.  Is he a starter in nba? probably with some of the weak teams.  He's an energy guy, very athletic for his size and young.

Gortat would be great for this team in 15-20 min per game. I believe he will go to NY or some other team offering him more, but if I could I would try to sign him

Plus, I live in Poland, so most of the news are related to Gortat's I would get many articles on the Celtics without even using the net

Agreed.  I think he would be a great pickup at $3 million, however, when you start talking about the full MLE, I just don't think he is a good value anymore.  I think it takes a special role player to get the entire MLE, and not weigh your team down, and I just don't think he is that.

He would be a nice addition but, like other said, it has to be for the right price and I don't see that price happening.

To paraphrase what cordobes said two weeks ago:
"Why overpay for Gortat when you can get the new Gortat?"

He also mentioned Ioannis Borousis, a Center in Greece. Two weeks later, the guy has a 4-year-contract-offer from the Spurs, who are known for their excellent scouting.

I think there have to be a handful of european Centers who could give us more or less the same as Gortat for less money.

Good points fellas. I just think that because "he wants to start" doesn't mean he'll start.  I think he needs to add a few more offenseive low post move and a small jumper to be a starter, did you see his disgusting air ball the other night? Even Perk would have been close on that one!!

With that said, if he's smart, he might think about coming to a championship club now, and with our "aging" stars, and being able to work with KG and Perk, he might be able to start for us sometime down the road, or he can improve his game by working with some veteran bigs.

However, I do understand he might not be worth the full MLE as a backup, but under any circumstance I believe he would make this team better without losing our core big Three or rondo, and we address the backup big need that we've been dying for now for over a year.  To me, filling that backup solid 7 footer is more important than finding a backup for Pierce and/or Rondo.
