I don't understand why people have problems with this kind of public displays of self-confidence.

It's not self confidence, it's disrespect for the Magic and arrogance from Mo Williams. He didn't say "I think/feel we are the best team in basketball" but "we are the best team in basketball" which is slightly different, especially since it's totally false. They were the best during the regular season but clearly not in the playoffs.

Plus, what's the point of making stupid prediction like this when you are struggling and when you're one of the biggest reasons to why your team is down 2-1?

Mo Williams is arrogant and stupid, and he did get what he deserved last night.

Its disrespect to think you're the better team and say you're going to win the series?

The Magic certainly hold the same beliefs and have said so. The only disrespect is the puppet and vitamin water commercials.

Can you honestly look in the mirror and say you would be warping it to be some sort of super moronic thing if this was a celtic starter and he was showing confidence in his team when we were down 2-1 in a series?

If you can, your a better man than I. I suspect that a whole bunch of these posters saying he's a egotistical moron would be singing a completely different tune if he wore green.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with having the confidence to not be a little girl and preface your comments with "I think/feel " that's a cop out. Either you believe your the best team or you don't.

If he had come out and said "were better than that team of scrubs" or "i think we all know they have an inferior team" or anything else that attacked the magic, fine, that's dumb. But the only ones who could take that as billboard material is an insecure team.

Why does he get negative points for coming out and having confadance in his team instead of laying out some PC filled tripe fest about how awesome the other team is and ending it with an "but aw shucks, i sure hope we can beat em!" statement like every other comment about the opponent?

The object of sports is to beat the stuffing out of the other team and prove your better than them. To do that, you better believe your the best team, or your going to get smoked.

Nothing wrong with having confidence in yourself and your team, even if it doesn't turn out to be justified. I'm sure he does think the cavs are the best team. im also quite sure the magic think they are the best team. that's why we play these games, to see who's right.

Right now, its sure looking like the magic are the best team and mo is wrong, but i don't need him to lie to me and act like he doesn't think his team is the best because we all have to pretend the world runs on sun shine and lollipops and every team should think the other team is just as good as they are.

I dislike mo for many things. Being overrated, stealing rondo's all star spot  >:(, and getting instant star cred for simply being lebron's second banana.

But to hate him because he honestly answered a question about who he thought was the best team? pass.

It depends on which Celtic player would have said that. For example, if Ray said that while struggling in the Orlando series I would have said that he should prove his value on the court instead of talking in the media. Now, if LeBron said that I wouldn't have said anything because he is the leader of the Cavs and the best player of his roster. It's the same thing with Pierce when he said after the Celtics were eliminated by Orlando that when they are healthy the Celtics are still the best team in the NBA. And he said "I believe" : "I honestly believe we are the best team in the NBA still with a healthy group of guys."

And I truly think that the "I think" is very important in the sentence, it changes the whole sense. With "I think" you are confident in your team. Without you're probably arrogant, but there's still a doubt. But the way Mo Williams said that just reveals that this was pure arrogance. He wasn't asked "which team is better"?. Here is the quote :

Quote
Williams remains confident.

“They deserve respect,” he said. “They are a good team. But we are the best team in basketball. I don’t feel that they’ve had to adjust to us one time in the series.”

Where is the question "Which team is the best team in the league"? Nowhere. It's pure arrogance and disrespect. It's not only arrogant, it's stupid because he is basically saying that the Cavs are the best team of the playoffs, that the Magic are inferior to them, but still the Cavs were forced to adjust while the Magic didn't have to... Guess what? They didn't have to adjust because they are better than the Cavs, thanks to the matchups. And it's even more foolish to make this statement when you're the number one failure of your team.

that's the quote in the ESPN story, which is shortened and only talks about that one comment. The WWL is not a good spot to go to get the whole story from.

Did you by chance watch the video of the whole interview? there is a beat writer asking him if he is still confidant that the cavs are the better team, as two people and i have already pointed out.

And why should it matter "what Celtic starter it was"? or are you implying that your impression of this would be based on how much you liked the player and how well they played, which is what i suspect. Thats a gross double standard. If your into double standards, fine,  i try to remain somewhat objective.

Players should always be confidant in thier team being the best, that's the ENTIRE POINT of playing the games. No one goes to the playoffs thinking "well [dang], were the 4th best team here, i better not act like i think we have a shot to win this thing....don't want to be seen as arrogant. better to know my place and be humble"

and your right "i think" does change the sentence. It changes it into a cop out that you can wiggle out of later because you lack a set to say what you really feel, that your team is the ebst around and your out to prove it.

Only since we all had to make sure no ones feelings got hurt has having the belief in yourself and team evolved into a "slight" against your opponent.

And as i said, i don't even like mo, i think he's an overrated player who only gets the star treatment because he happens to be the second best player on lebron's team, but the twisting of words to dodge the issue and try to crucify a cav for a harmless comment in this thread because people are bitter is off the scale, and quite funny to me.

I didn't watch the video of the interview so I didn't know about that, thanks for pointing it out, it changes the whole sense of the statement. It seems like the media wanted to create some "controversy" by taking the quote out of its context.

I didn't choose the right words to express my thought about the Celtics players. It matters to me to know "which player" of the Celtics would have said that not because of the appreciation I have of him (Ray is my favorite player on the team by the way) but since I would consider his performances in the series to judge his comments. If the player who says that is shooting 20% from the floor with 7 points and 9 turnovers per game, I would say that he should shut up and play better because he would be the biggest culprit for the failure of his team. If the guy is the leader of the team or if he is having a good series I wouln't mind... or mind less, because I don't like this kind of statement.

And I'm still convinced that the "I think/I believe" changes the whole sense of the sentence, yeah. Though in Mo's case, since I've seen the interview now, he just answered the question of the reporter.

But it doesn't change the fact that Mo is an arrogant guy who thinks he is better than he truly is since he is LeBron's lieutenant. I'm just glad that he doesn't make stupid displays of arrogance anymore after each bucket scored by LeBron or by himself. :P

Oh no question about the last part, I dislike Mo's game and his instant star status for being the best of a "meh" group of players backing up a superstar, Just don't understand this rush to destroy a player for believing in his team, even if said team will soon be fishin  8).

Mo Williams is arrogant and stupid, and he did get what he deserved last night.

What's the freaking difference? If he says "we're the best team", why aren't we assuming he's giving his own opinion? What was he supposed to meant when he says that sentence? That, somehow, he's talking about somebody else opinion?

Just recently Paul Pierce said that the Celtics are the best team in the NBA, even though they were eliminated in the 2nd round. Was he being arrogant and stupid also?

Sportsmen have been saying this kind of things since ever. It's a form of self-motivation. Mohammad Ali did it; José Mourinho does it. And if there ever was an arrogant and cocky NBA player his name was Larry Bird.

You all are missing the point. We dont need an explaination of why we hate the guy for saying what he said. Since when do we have to give a fair shake to other players teams. I only need to prove a few things:
1) Where he plays  >:(
2) Who he plays for   >:(
3) Who he plays with       >:(
4) Any jersey color other than green w/o clovers should be despised as well as the people in them.  :P

Did I mention if he's not a celtic???? BTW former celtics are not exempt from these laws. Delonte is as deserving a ring as Trent Dilfer.

Now excuse me as I hammer these commandments into stone tablets.

No i got the point that some fans have a irrational hatred of other teams, I just don't agree with it.

I mean, this just seems SO petty to have 4 pages dedicated to killing a guy for a throw away statement...that's all.

thats part of the fun being a fan. Its the only time we can be irrational and feel good about it. It's only bad when you are trying to have a valid argument while using this mindset
