I'm just gald that smug look was wiped off that smug face via elbo. Now AV just needs to get the job Ray started finished. Nothing wrong with being confident. But I think it would have been wise to answer the question a different way.

like what?

The question was, as far as i can tell (you can barley hear the guy's initial question in the clip)

"Do you still think your the better team?"

I have zero problem with mo thinking his team is the best. he better think that way and start sinking shots if they have any chance in hell of beating orlando.

If he had come out and said "mabey, I dont know" or something, i would have benched him for tonight's game and started west at the point.

I don't understand why people have problems with this kind of public displays of self-confidence.
I don't have any problem with a public display of confidence or even a guarantee.  Like you, to me that part is a non-story.  My problem is declaring themselves the greatest team in the world verbally before anything is proven on the court.

He should believe in his heart that they are the best but it should be backed up by his team winning a championship in the process.  I am just anticipating the humor of them possibly not even reaching the finals after a comment like this.

but again, he didn't randomly go off on a tangent about being great, he was asked a question about how good he thought his team was an he answered the question in a confidant manner.

If he just out of the blue called out the magic, i would agree with you, but he was answering a series of questions by the beat reporter about believing in his team...

...and Crownsy, I totally understand what you are saying and do not disagree.  Guarantees are non-stories especially when asked for by reporters.  Again, believing they are the better team is one thing.  He should believe it.  Something is wrong if he doesn't.

However, my shock was the unprovoked declaration of "we are the greatest team in the world."  I say, based on what?  They haven't even reached the Finals yet.  He went beyond the answer the man's question begged for.

Has the "guaranteed win" become the most overrated thing in sports?

Where's the warranty on these statements?

Non-story.
Yup

I dont have a problem with confidenc or guarantees for that matter. I just think when your team is being outplayed and is very lucky not to be sdown 03 you shouln't be making staements like this.

The smart way to answer would be to say something like "I have faith in my team that we win this series, but the best team is to be determoned by who wins the championship"

The whole lucky to not be down 0-3 narrative bothers me. If Rashard Lewis doesn't hit that three point shot in game one, or West doesn't miss his own wide open look in game one the Cavs are up 2-1 themselves.

Both games in Cleveland were close games, essentially coin flips between even teams. Only game 3 was decisive. Even then it wasn't a blow out by any means.

This has been Mo's "MO" all season...funny thing about it all, if James is not the one doing the gauranteeing, its a moot point in my opinion.

It at least holds more water than Patrick Ewing's (even though that one came true)

Normaly I would agree with you, but when a team blows 2 leads like the Cavs did, they are lucky to only lose one of those games. It can go both ways I know but it seems to me that the magic have been the team thats more in control. The Cavs are having to fight more for their points than the magic and I don't see Cleveland winning this series unless the magic meltdown

The Celtics almost blew a huge lead in game 2 of the Finals. The Lakers did blow a huge lead in game 4 and almost blew another big one in game 5.

I agree that the Magic have been the better team overall, that is why they are up 2-1. But the lucky to not be down 0 - 3 is still a bunk argument.

best team in the NBA? really Mo? what arrogance you have and your statement sums up why the cavs will be down tonight 3-1. Mo....you don't have the heart and toughness of a boston team...you had a great regular season...but guess what...when you lose the ECF you will have won exactly the same thing boston won this season...a division title....and Mo...you might want to hit some shots before running your trap...i saw your picture on the milk cartons at Kroger this afternoon...

exactly, the Lakers were lucky to not lose the series 4-1 with that game 5 performance. We were a much much better team than la and controlled the series. If the teams are close then I could see your point. But you have to look at how the teams are playing each other and what team seems to be struggling the most. The magic have established a trend in this series as to which team is mentaly tougher and which team is more consistant. Thus far the Cavs have started off fast but were not able to keep the energy level up to sustain, the magic have played through and imo controlled all 3 games minus a few bad stretches.

How many times does a guy jack a 3 with one second left and drain it while being gaurded? They won on a very low % shot that. Lewis' shot was not a desperation shot.

Neither was Delonte West's three to win game one after Rashard's three.

The point of the analogy is that how big of a lead you had at one point the game isn't really relevant in my mind in judging teams. The overall quality of play is. You can get a big lead just by hitting a series of bad shots, but eventually it catches up to you.
