KG's post moves

I was thinking about something the other day, and wanted to see what you guys thought. Why doesn't KG have better post moves?

As an overall player, KG is clearly superior to Al Jefferson at this point. But, in terms of post moves, Jefferson blows KG out of the water. Why do you guys think this is?

It definitely isn't size or athleticism, as KG has much more of those than Al does. It isn't a lack of touch, because KG has shown he has very good touch.

Maybe it's a lack of focus/work ethic when it comes to developing his post game? Could be, but KG's work ethic and focus are legendary, so I don't know about this.

Still, I don't get it. If you gave KG the post game of Al Jefferson, KG could be the best overall player in the league when you consider both ends of the court.

Not enough lower body strength/girth. Similar to David Robinson in that respect. But if he did, he wouldn't have nearly as much lateral quickness on D. It's a trade-off.

Howard is the same way to a large degree.

Kg does have a post game he just doesn't use it. the dream shake he uses is nasty and he has some sweet fakes and hook shots

Remember KG giving Gasol the dream shake in the finals..

His offensive game is to versatile to go in the low post all the time.  Therefor, he doesn't have as many moves as a premiere low post scorer.


Doesn't mean he doesn't have all the moves he needs to be very successful down there.

I agree that KG does have a nice dream-shake. He also has a decent jump hook. But why not anything going to the basket? Again, think about how many lay-ups Al Jefferson creates for himself. I love KG, and am not trying to blast him, just curious as to why he hasn't developed this part of his game.

And if he did have such an extensive array of post moves, why would he prefer 15 foot fadeaways to the wide open dunks/lay-ups that Jefferson frequently gets?

Maybe it's because of his lack of lower body strength, as Butterbean said. But IMO, lower body strength shouldn't be a huge factor in the finesse-type of moves that Jefferson uses. And Jefferson isn't much thicker than Garnett, if at all, and IMO, Jefferson has the best post moves in the NBA since Hakeem.

KG has excellent post moves and great footwork. Remember McHale worked with him in Minny. McHale has said repeatedly that KG has terrific post moves and he should know, he arguably has the best post moves this game has ever seen.

KG has it all, dream shake, drop step, baby hook, and fadeaway. He is thin but he competes as hard as anyone in the post.

There are several reasons why we haven't seen enough of it. 1)On offense Doc chooses to use him in the high pick-n-roll because he is such a terrific jump shooter from 18 feet in. This takes him away from the basket. 2)Teams will always double him in the post and he invites that because he knows he will be able to find the open man.

KG has never wanted to play like a BIG MAN.

When he first came into the league he insisted that his height be listed as less than 7 feet. It still is. The Celtics list him at 6' 11". But look at him on the court next to legitimate 7 footers. He is clearly taller than Howard who is also listed at 6' 11". He is approaching Ilgauskas, who is 7'3".

KG has always played away from contact. He doesn't like to bang on the offensive end.

He had an opportunity to learn from a great low post player in McHale, but never took advantage of it.

Garnett was one of the first "European style" big men, like Nowitzgi, using height to shoot over guys, rather than going at them down low.

At 30 something, I wouldn't expect Kevin to change.
