Question for Cap Experts

I have a pretty solid understanding of how the cap works, but I have been wondering about one thing for a long time - what is the maximum ammount a player can leave on the table for a buyout?

I think Steph gave up $1 million. Could he have given up $2? $6? $12? All of it?

Yeah, a team can give up his entire salary, if he wants to.  That's what happened with Derek Fisher in Utah.

Yeah, a team can give up his entire salary, if he wants to.  That's what happened with Derek Fisher in Utah.

Thanks for getting back to me guys.

So in theory we could trade Ray Allen as an expiring deal to another team, he agrees to give up $5.5M in a buyout, and we could bring him back on board for the full MLE (after the waiting period runs out)?

Just thinking that would save the other team an immediate $5.5M (along with any money he saves them going forward) PLUS we could hang on to Ray.
