The second KG got pulled from the lineup after his abbreviated return, most of us knew something was amiss. The official word from the brass has changed from (1) We’re just giving him a little rest; nothing to worry about; to (2) KG is out until the last week of the playoffs, but won’t miss the playoffs; to (3) KG is out for the entire playoffs; to (4) KG “has a very rare knee injury” that can only be repaired by rest. The surgery he is having will not fix it.

Now if (4) doesn’t strike the fear of God in you, then you have stronger cajones than me. Still, I am actually hoping that whoever keeps coming up with this crap is just out-and-out wrong and that the surgery will in fact fix it. If not, then we may have seen the last of KG as we know him. It is entirely possible, if he does have some sort of rare injury, that the new #5 will be like the old #5 in that there will be a permanent “KG Watch” in Celtic nation.

“Hey, psst. I heard KG was playing full court with Reggie Miller by their home."

“No way! 2010 championship here we come!”

“The reports that KG was playing full court basketball were pure speculation and false. KG can barely walk without limping, much less play full court basketball.”

Then the next rumor ensues three weeks later.

I really hope this is not the case. But it wouldn’t surprise me.
What I’d like to see, but never will, is a re-hoisting of banner 17 with all the Celtics present, meaning all of the living Celtics, from the 1986 squad (including Walton, Sichting, Wedman, and Carlisle) to Cowens and Silas.

This banner should now be revered as the previous 16, especially since it might be the last one f or a while.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
A (vague) update from KG:

Quote
Garnett walked out through a back hallway last night with only two messages for a small contingent of media.

“I’m looking forward to getting better,” he said, before adding, “I’ll see you guys next year.”

And quotes from Doc:

Quote
“We were hoping, and I obviously didn’t think it would happen,” the Celtics coach said after last night’s season-ending 101-82 loss to the Magic in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at the Garden. “If we had won this series, I can tell you there was no way he was going to play the next series. As reported at one point, he was going to have surgery, and then we decided, why? Just fate, hope, you never know. So we were hoping. But I didn’t think it was going to happen.” . . .

"Yeah, he’ll get surgery eventually, him and, you know Leon [Powe] has had his already. But it’s no rush. His surgery is not going to be anything that’s going to take all summer."

... and Ray:

Quote
“We were waiting,” Ray Allen said. “We kept thinking he’s coming back, he’s coming back, and then we realized he wasn’t once they playoffs got here. That meant the group that we had was going to have to play harder, and Glen (Davis) really had to step up, Mikki (Moore) had to play more minutes and Perk (Kendrick Perkins [stats]) had to step up and be defensive captain up there.

“As a unit those bigs learned a lot about themselves and leadership roles, and what it will take to play alongside Kevin next year to make this team even better defensively.”

Just curious, where did you come up with this number 4 explanation of KG's injury? I have not heard this anywhere.

Other than #1 did management say any of this? What I've been hearing for a while was that KG will have surgery and should be fine for the season. Since his recovery from the surgery should be short there was no need to hurry the procedure and they were waiting to see if it improved enough through rest to play in the later rounds of the playoffs.

which, to play devils advocate for a theory roy and i had when it went from strain to "oh yea, he has a bone spurs, didn't we tell you guys?"

considering how minor they are claiming the surgery is, this adds prudence to the theory that the Celtics medical staff, not for the first time, made a major misdiagnosis that was caught to late to do anything about.

between this, AL's ankles being  labeled as fine when he had bone chips, west, and pierce a few seasons ago, i have serious questions about the celtics medical staff.

I think that if he'd had the surgery in late February or early March he'd have had a tough time coming back this season, so the better bet was to wait and see. As for the medical staff, I'd put the trades for Raef and Wally right up there too. Danny's plan for Raef was to shut him down after he came, have surgery or whatever, and then come back at full strength the next year. I doubt he cooked up that plan with no input from doctors.
