Professional basketball player Darius Miles is free on bond after being accused in Illinois of possessing marijuana police say they found after a traffic stop.

Police in the St. Louis suburb of Fairview Heights say the 27-year-old Miles was alone in his 1996 Chevrolet Impala when they pulled him over Wednesday night for allegedly failing to use a turn signal.

Police ticketed him for driving with a suspended license. After the car was towed away, police say a search of it uncovered a misdemeanor amount of marijuana in a bag.

A `96 Impala!...I guess he was at least trying to keep a low profile.  Stopping at stop signs helps stay inconspicuous too.   ::)

Yup

Not using his turn signal?  Seems like kind of a bogus reason for a stop.

So what? Marijuana isn't a big deal anymore. The people who still make a huge deal about it are those who have never tried or watch stupid movies like Reefer Madness and believe the propaganda. And really, there isn't any reason it shouldn't be legal, anyway. Alcohol is. Cigarettes are, salvia is, and that is just a short lived LSD trip. Most NBA players do it, I do it, and I'm sure a lot of memebers here do as well. It's NOT a big deal, especially considering how little Darius actually had.

Maybe, but I know if I was driving on a suspended license with a bag of weed in my car, I'd be smart enough to at least obey routine traffic laws.

This will hurt his image, but it's not like marijuana is going to hurt his game--the little game he had.

Well said sir...TP for you!

Seriously though:

1) Marijuana
2) DUI
3) Steroids

None of these things surprise me anymore.

I think it goes more along the lines of 'if you are black, it would be smart to obey routine traffic laws'.  The suspended license and the weed is secondary to the primary reason given for him to be pulled over in the first place.

That year Impala SS is like a hood classic, I don't like it but lot's of guys get them and customize the hell out of them.

While I agree with everything you are saying, it is still illegal and some one in his position could have used better sense. Someone like him whose career is hanging by a thread doesn't need to do anything to make GMs think twice about him. As for me, as long as he wasn't high while driving, I could care less if he had it on him.

From the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/may/14/grizzly-forward-darius-miles-charged-pot/

Quote
Although the Griz haven't publicly stated their intentions, their plan was always to start next season without Miles.

The Griz grew weary of Miles' waning work ethic and his relationship with rookie guard O.J. Mayo.

There was widespread concern in the organization about Miles' off-the-court influence on Mayo near the end of the season.

I just remember hearing all these same type of talks/concerns when Miles was with Portland, but last year when the C's were considering signing him, a lot of people were arguing he could/would/has changed.  I also remember hearing he was a model citizen with the C's.

Seems like the same old story.  Guy bottoms out.  Decides he's going to turn his life around.  Swears he's turned over a new leaf.  Due to his change of heart/attitude, get's another chance.  Gets comfortable again then reverts right back to the old self.  You hear these types of stories way too often.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I agree with most of this, except

- It's still very, very stupid for a guy in Miles' position to be breaking traffic laws with weed in his car.  The stupidity of having the stuff there speaks more to his character than the actual substance itself.
- Nobody watches Reefer Madness except stoners and hipsters.  Most modern popular media that references pot runs from basically neutral with a tacked on half-assed "still not smart to do it" message, to downright positive.
- Not everything is better with a bag of weed.  Carpentry, for example.

agreed, the pot is almost a secondary issue to the sheer stupidity of driving around with a bag in the car.

Guys just got his life semi back on track. dumb move on his part.
