I'm watching the dallas denver game and wondering if anyone else thinks that carmelo is very much like paul pierce? i don't see him play that often by whenever i do his game reminds me of the captain.

thoughts?

A lot of people have made this comparison, maybe most notably Bill Simmons immediately after last year's Finals.  I agree, Carmelo is the most similar guy in talent, game, clutchness, and temperament to Pierce in the league.  If he can turn his surliness and me-firstness into high effort and team play like Pierce did, he'll be a force in the league for a long time to come.  He's made great strides this year but still has a ways to go.

They're both aren't the quickest guys in the world but they get where they want to go.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

I'll add, since I'm the last one standing at work and essentially just watching the game, that as long as I'm making comparisons, the birdman as a poor man's rodman?

and kenny should not be wearing a red jacket and bow tie. that's just wrong.

I agree with the comparison, although Carmelo seems to have more of an inside/PF type game sometimes compared to Pierce.

Pierce and Melo are quick, they;re just not fast. Yes there's a difference, it's all about when you make your move which allows them to get to the hoop easily

Melo doesn't pass nearly as well as Pierce nor does Melo get to the line as much as Pierce.

to play devils advocate, pierce at melo's age didn't pass as well, nor get to the line as often.

I think its a pretty fair comparison, right down to the sorta selfish attitude, took paul till his 30's to lose that.

2 guys that remind me of Paul are Brandon Roy and Caron Butler (big strong 2/3s with tons of heart and leadership qualities).

Melo's got a similar build/game, but mentally he doesn't really remind me of Pierce.  I'm still kind of stuck thinking he's a punk, but perhaps I need to give him more credit for how he's playing lately.

Anyway, I'm rooting for Denver to give LA hell after a good long 7 game series with Houton  ;D

Carmelo Anthony career FT: 6.1 for 7.7 per game at 79.6%
Paul Pierce career FT: 6.2 for 7.8 per game at 79.8%

*sidenote*: Pierce is 29 for his last 30 FT in the last 3 games

Carmelo has gone: 9-11, 11-14, 8-9, 7-7, 7-7 in games this playoffs so far

I don't get the comparison at all, Melo is a ballerina and Pierce is a guy who gets it done by shrugging off contact. Pierce does play under great control, but I would never compare the way he moves to Melo.

I think Lebron and Artest are much better comparisons, they and Pierce have a similar kind of body and power 3 game at least but Melo is such a smoothie, a finesse guy.

All Ballerina team - guys who move with unusual smoothness:
D Wade or Chris Paul maybe
Kobe
Melo
Dirk
Pau Gasol

i agree, and i've been watching him since Chauncey picked him up and carried him to the second seed in the western conference. if he could focus on D, and play team basketball he could reclaim his right to be on the list elite young talent with Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Chris Paul, and Dwight Howard.

Melo is much smoother than Paul Pierce and doesn't play the same type of game.  Melo reminds of Pierce I think because he has a lot of offensive moves and is crafty, but really Melo is longer and more athletic.  He's really a complete offensive player and will be a nightmare to cover for many years.
