I've been so impressed with Chris Anderson whenever I watch the Nuggets play.  They're one of my favorite teams to watch play and alot of it has to do with him.  It really makes me wonder...Birdman said himself he thought the Celtics didn't sign him after his tryout with them because he thought he was out of shape at that point.

Just how out of shape was he?  Cause he must have been really out of shape, or his try out was absolutely terrible.

I think they probley had more concerns about the rampant cocaine and meth problem he had 2 years ago, and that was a PC way to put it.

THat said, I also love what he brings for that nuggets team, and i wanted him for this team in the summer, and by all accounts, he's turned his life around so good for him :D.

That was a miss for us, POB was less fo a risk off the court for sure however, and it seems the celtics weren't willing to risk that birdman would get back to his old habits.

hindsight's 20/20

he was suspended by the league for two full seasons due to repeated  drug test failures for recreational drugs. as josh howard can attest, the NBA doesn't go that hard for weed.

the rumors have always been it was coke, and his mother, tragicly, is a HUGE meth and coke head, so he didn't really have a strong anti-drug background.

If he had rampant problems with pot, then color me suprised, but to m, the leauge doesn't seem like the kind that bounces a guy for 2 years for the sticky icy.

Well POB is addicted to apathy, so I still think Birdman was the obvious choice (as many were saying last Summer).

Well POB was out of shape too. Danny just likes some guys more than others (Banks, Robert Swift, Telfair, Pruitt, Giddens, O'Bryant. When the Ray Allen trade was going down the Sonics wanted Rondo over Delonte. Danny countered with we'll include Rondo if you include Swift and then Presti backed off Rondo, which makes Danny a lucky man times too when it comes to Swift, b/c he offered the pick that would be Al Jefferson + another pick for Swift previously. Point is Danny's right sometimes and wrong his share too (Brandon Roy?)  Giddens and POB were both head scratchers last Summer, which have left us thin this Spring.

An player trying to come back into the league after being suspended two years for drugs shows up to the workout out of shape.

Celtics, already having gone through the headaches of dealing with addiction in the form of Vin Baker.

Why is anyone really ever surprised?

He wasn't suspended for repeated positive tests for marijuana.  He was kicked out of the league for violating the NBA's policy on drugs of abuse.  Marijuana and performance enhancing drugs do not fall under the "drugs of abuse" category.  For confidentiality reasons, the NBA has never said what he tested positive for (and neither has he), but cocaine, meth, heroin, etc. would be possibilities.  He was not kicked out for repeated marijuana violations.  He got into some hard stuff and failed a test, it wasn't pot, although I would hazard a guess that he was using that a good deal, too.

"Hindsight is 20/20" -- yes, but you never really have the true counterfactual.

Birdman is playing great, and I wish all the best for him (and I hope Denver moves on past Dallas, as looks likely), and I wish that Birdman was playing for the Cs instead of Denver.

Given all that, it is still not clear that he would have had as much success in Boston as he is having in Denver.  He is a drug addict - recovering, yes, and all the power to him - but he is a drug addict, and things could have gone very different for him this year if he was with the Cs, living in Boston away from his support group, etc.

Not trying to knock the guy (see para. 2 above), just trying to throw an alternative view out there...
Celtics fan for life.

We can't say he had a "rampant" problem with anything other than booze(which he admitted).  For all we know he made the bad decision of popping an ecxtacy pill on a few occasions.  Not a good decision for sure, but that doesn't put him on the Josh Hamilton level either.

You are right that we can't say for sure, but reading his backstory he seemed to show signs of an addictive personality.  It is possible (but unlikely) that he would have a major addiction issue with alcohol, but only recreational use of drugs of abuse.  But I wouldn't really know for sure, maybe there is a blogger on here with some background in psychology who would know more?

Not to mention the C's under Ainge have generally tried to stay away from players with character issues.  I'm not gonna sit here and criticize his lifestyle, but you would have to admit between his new look and his history, he isn't necessarily good publicity (unless you are Denver and are trying to set a world record for most tattoos on one 15-man roster).  I am just trying to look at it from a business standpoint.  Although one could make the point KG's antics and language on the court aren't family-friendly either.

you think he failed a drug test 3 times on X (whats needed to even approach suspension level) and then when he crossed the line again the league decided thats worth 2 years off?

come on, be realistic.

That said, big miss by us, and big props to him for cleaning up his life and making a sucesful return. I love watching him play, i hope he keps it up  :D

I may be wrong, but I thought you only had to fail once under the "drugs of abuse" category to get a ban.  I think it's part of the CBA, they can kick you out for one failed test.
