After closely watching BBD through the last few months of the season and being frustrated by his inability to score down on the low block I have been baffled by how the shot charts after the games show him converting baskets at the rim. He doesn't score off breakaways by simply laying it in, but he still scores. This is what I have come up with and want to figure out how we can make this a more consistent part of his game.

BBD does a very solid job when he gets the ball dished to him about 10-12 feet out as he is going to the rim. He has usually having to do something creative with it to not get blocked, but he usually finds a way to put it in. When he is given the ball with his back to the basket, or gets a rebound and then pauses and tries to score he is not effective at all.

My initial thought is that we need to get Rondo to penetrate more and dish him the ball. This can be a designed play to get him more touches going towards the basket. The other is I think he needs to stop getting himself down underneath the basket. He needs to stay about 7-8 feet out because if he is in there with other bigs he typically won't get the board anyway. This way he can get those longer rebounds and immediately go towards the rim. He needs to start being smarter about where he is on the offensive end of the floor so that he can take advantage of the two things he does decently. Shoot the wide open outside jumper, and drive to the basket.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
From what I've seen he's got crafty layup skills. You won't see many baby hooks or dream shake tributes from Baby, what you're gonna see is him stick his but out to create space with the guy behind him, and then pump fake until he shoots the ball up on the small of the backboard. Another thing I've noticed is that he has a super quick release here. So, if you don't time Baby's lay-in correctly, you're never gonna catch it.

  • Thumper of the BASS!
baby is very predictable down low and gets blocked or misses the lay up 80% of the time

Baby is like a Fat-Small Forward, he's actually quite good at creating is own shot. If you run the pick and pop, then clear out once its in his hands he can really go to work with pump-fakes, drives, and even some pretty impressive turnaraounds/fadeaways. He's a very agile scorer.

What's new about this?

the team runs pick-and-roll, pop, and cuts for him all the time - that's how he is effective finishing.

He is not a post player though - they will not be tossing the ball to him on the block and having him go to work.
