According to thefreedictionary, flopping is to To fall or lie down heavily and noisily or to move with a sudden noise. Therefore, is it safe to say that one can flop without falling? In other words, is the word "flopping" limited to faking and falling? Does flopping happen in the NFL, NHL or MLB? if so, how?

Two colleagues are arguing about flopping, its definition and whether it is prevalent in sports outside of Basketball and Baseball. What do you think?

It's more associated with soccer than basketball. There's a player in the MLS (Carlos Ruiz) who's nickname (don't know the spelling as it's in spanish) means "the little fish" because he flops so much.

yea, its a considered a "cagey" move in some soccer leagues and dirty in others.

i think the reason its associated in the nba with the influx of european players is the perception that its a soccer only thing.

Yes but what is flopping?

IF a WR is running for a ball and jerks his body trying to sell a penalty after the cornerbacks slight contact, is that a form of flopping?

Exaggerating the effect of a small amount of contact or no contact in order to get a foul called on your opponent.

Yep, pretty much that.  Sometimes called "diving", in sports like hockey.

You have to fall down in basketball to end up lying down, so yes you have to fall to flop. Now give me my TP for participating! :P ;)

I co-sign; that's what a flop is.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.
