The Celtics, already shorthanded at forward with star Kevin Garnett likely out for the playoffs, suffered another significant blow today when they learned that Leon Powe will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee.

. . .

Knee injuries are nothing new to Powe. He originally injured his knee after his junior year of high school, undergoing reconstructive surgery, but returned to play a full season as a senior.

After leading the Pac-10 in rebounding as a freshman at the University of California in 2003-04, he needed further surgery on his left knee prior to his sophomore season that required two operations, including a complete reconstruction.

This will make the fourth time that left knee has been operated on: an initial reconstructive procedure, a two-part "complete reconstruction," and now surgery to repair both ACL and meniscus tears.

I love the guy, and can't help but feel awful for him. He's always got his motor running, and he's not the type to back down from a challenge or a fight. I wish him the best of luck, and hope to see him back with the team next year after a full recovery.

my gut says no, but I'm not sure - I was wondering what PJ Brown is up to these days...

Tough times for Powe. No doubt he's going to bounce back faster and come back stronger than anyone else would.

Let's hope that Scali can come back in the form he left us in. Playing good help D and dropping the 3 balls. I guess Bill Walker will be forced into action. I wouldn't be shocked if he plays pretty well.

This sucks. I co-sign dark lord's comments. He is a very nice guy and you can tell that he doesn't take for granted how fortunate he is to be in the NBA. He treats fans as equals. I fear that this injury cost him millions of dollars.

Powe was a first-round talent and legitimate starter possibility who the Celtics only got because of his knees.  Solid bench players are usually guys who have skills, but also flaws.  For Powe, it was an overcome-able height deficiency and questions about his durability.  Not only does this injury potential cost Powe millions, but it may mark him for the rest of his career as a guy who shouldn't play more than 15mpg.

As much as people rag on Mikki Moore here, just imagine where this team would be without Moore as a warm body if Danny Ainge had swung and missed going for someone like Joe Smith.  Moore, as someone who is at least familiar with the system, might be worth the minimum as the 11th or 12th man insurance policy for next year.  If this injury means Powe is more likely to return to the Celtics, there still needs to be a big on the bench behind Powe/Scalabrine because of health concerns and I doubt you get anything better for the minimum.

Yea no doubt Leon has never taken a day off. Most 2nd rounder never make a team and Leon could have been starting for most teams. His life story is truly a sad and at the same time amazing how he's bounced back from all of his hardship. This guy has earned every penny he's made in the NBA and there are very few guys who you could say that about.

If I'm not mistaken March 1st was the deadline for teams to sign new players who are eligible for the playoff roster.

No, they could sign them up until the day the playoffs start, they just couldn't be on another teams roster after March 1st.

This is the C's roster for the playoffs.  All they can hope for is Scal to be able to play, and the rest of the guys stepping it up.

Ah, that makes sense.  Thanks for the clarification.

No problem, its a common misconception that is constantly reinforced when NBA beat writers keep getting it wrong.

The man has worked for every scrap of seconds he gets for this team. When Kg went down last year and this year, Powe stepped up in an epic way. I'll never be persuaded that BBD will EVER be the player Powe is, and if their is someone on this bench who deserves a huge Posey like contract it was Powe. JR Giddens makes 1 mill this year for playing in the D league, Scal makes 3 mil for being a blob who sat on the bench most of his time here and has no intangibles (i'm speaking of before the concussion and this season) . TA makes more money then Powe and TA's played like what? 1/4 of Powe's games this season and last? The one player who has never disappointed me is Powe. He IS a player who possesses all the intangibles, the drive, and the attitude to be a great player who should have a great pay day. Davis, Scal, TA, Giddens, Walker, Varejao Noah, T.Thomas<<<<<<<<< POWE.  I'm curious, who is Doc going to yell at since his favorite whipping boy is gone? Gabe doesn't play......and he's runner up in that category.
True Celtic = Leon Powe

Bring back the show!!!!

I really like Powe too, Scalablob, but after these two big knee injuries it will be hard to justify keeping him unless it's for very little money.  The risk of future injury is just too great.  It's a real shame because I think everybody wants to see Powe play even more than he has been, but it's probably not going to happen now.

Has anyone figured out exactly what play Powe was injured on?  I'm watching the replay, and he hobbles up the court just before getting taken out, but he's hobbling around like that pretty much as soon as he comes in, and was very reluctant to jump, run, or box out.  I think he may have hurt it well before he actually came out.  Hope the extra time running on it didn't exacerbate the injury.
