Don't count us out yet. If you were lucky enough to watch the Celtics in 1987 and 1988, then you know what I'm not talking about. We lost to the Fakers in the 1987 Finals and the Pistons in the 1988 ECF. But, I never saw a team play with more heart...ever...they were in my book the best Celtics team of all time...even though they didn't win. Everyone was hurt...Larry was already starting to have a bad back...McHale ruined his career by playing on his ankles...Chief was spraining his ankle and having wrapped every game...do you remember both DJ and Danny having their thighs completely wrapped. And, we really had no bench. Every game and every series was a battle. Detroit, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Milwaukee were all quality teams. There were no easy games. The play that realy summed it up for me was in the last minute of the 1988 ECF. We were down by 10 in last minute of the 4th Quarter and we were about to be eliminated by the Pistons. The Pistons had a 3 on 1 or 3 on 2 fastbreak and they were at the top of the circle when Larry comes running faster than I ever saw him run at halfcourt. He was never going to get in the play. The game was over and so was the series. Then, I knew how he stole the ball with DJ...Larry never gave up. Going back to 1981 when we were down 3 to 1 against Philly and came back...which almost rivals the 3-0 comeback against the Yankees. I'll always remember the quote from Chief where he said they did not even for one second doubt that they could come back...he said they couldn't. This is where we will see the heart of a Champion...that is what Celtics Pride and Tradition is. You watch...we may go down...but we will go down swinging.
