During the '08 offseason, Danny Ainge made it clear when not signing James Posey that he was looking towards the future as much as he was the present. With Garnett seemingly done for the playoffs, us fans can't help but think of that ever-present "window" before the Celtics are just too old. Next year, with everyone a year older and a bench unit that will again need to be rebuilt (Likely no Marbury, probably only one of Davis and Powe, etc.), what direction do the Celtics need to go in?

When I look at the current Celtics, I fear that we're en route to become the new Detroit Pistons. Always in the mix, but just past that point where they can really win it all. I'm not here to declare the death of the Celtics as we now know them, but if we can't win next year, should we really be looking to keep the team together? Ray's contract expires after next year, then Pierce's, then KG's.

I think most of us would hope that, one way or another, Pierce will end his career with the Celtics, but other than him, is there any benefit to keeping Ray and KG on in order to have around 3 more winning seasons with little chance to make any real progress?

I guess I just want to know what the fans around here think the future is for the Celtics? Do we have any definite pieces for a future Championship team other than Rondo and maybe Perk? When do we draw the line between competing and rebuilding?

If the team has a good off-season, I see absolutely no reason to believe that they won't be a contender next year.  Because of that, I'd supplement the core, rather than blowing it up.

Let's say we rebuild.  What are the chances that, as a result of that rebuilding, we're left with a team that has a good a chance of winning as next year's squad?

The thing about rebuilding is that the vast, vast majority of the time, it doesn't pay off.  Look at the post-Jordan Bulls for a shining example.

I've also thought about this a lot over the past few weeks... Don't really want to think about it right now, but I'm sure it will be a hot topic in the offseason.

I really don't know what they are going to do because it is a tough spot to be in. If you can sign a 35 year old Ray Allen to a short term extension for under $8 million, would they do it? We pretty much have KG til he's retired, and I think Pierce ends his career with the celts.

Maybe by the time 2010 comes around, we could have acquired a good wing player via trade/draft/FA that can fill the shoes of Ray Allen, and sign Jesus as a specialist off the bench? Idk if that's realistic, but its what I hope for.

If Ainge has a decent off-season (and I believe he learned his lesson) and Garnett comes back from injury fully healthy, next season the C's be a top 3 team in the NBA. To rebuild such a strong team would be one of the most bizarre things in the history of sports.

No rebuilding, sign Dwight Howard in 2011 and Danny Granger in 2012, problem solved.

With so many teams hurting money wise, I am sure we could buy a pick in this years draft to give us some length off the bench. No more undersized fours please.

Ray Allen to NYC for Curry, Jeffries, #8 Pick, #38 Pick.
Scal, House, Allen and Walker to CHI for Hinrich
Draft Greg Monroe and Danny Green.
Resign Pruitt.
Sign

Rondo, Pruitt
Hinrich, Wafer, Giddens
Pierce, Green
Garnett, Jeffries, Monroe
Perkins, Curry

The key is Monroe - I think he is a franchise FC in the Chris Webber mold. I also think Green is going to be Danny Granger light - a do it all small forward that can knock it down from outside and play tenacious D. Maybe sign a Von Wafer, Ronald Murray or a Dahntay Jones as your first guard off the bench.

We'd be better off not trading Ray at all. Just the thought of someone in the "Chris Webber" mold makes banners fall from the rafters.

Chris Webber is a fringe hall of famer, and a guy that could shoot, drive, pass, rebound, and finish in his prime - not interested???

Not if he also has a turkey leg stuck in his esophagus during big games like Webber.

Just like Garnett before he started running with Pierce and Allen...

Nope, because Webber had teammates.
