Neat article on something that happened the other night.  I consider myslef a pretty good student of the game and I had never heard of this before.

I actually think this makes sense.  My understanding was that in general, any run that scores on the third out of an inning when there is a force play is no good regardless of when the runner crosses the plate, but a runner that gets across before a tag is made to end an inning is credited with the run.

By choosing to make a tag rather than stepping on the base, the middle infielder afforded the Dodgers the chance to score.  And normal rules regarding an appeal to third base would apply - if Arizona doesn't appeal re: Ethier leaving early, the umpires aren't going to make a call to change it.
