Ray Allen got suspended on a cheap elbow where Varrejeo didn't even move and barely affected him after Varrejeo started it with locking arms.  Trevor Ariza ran Rudy Fernandez down on a breakaway fast break down 29 points wound his arm back and took a swipe at his head knocking him to the ground and put Rudy on a stretcher and did not get suspended and Rudy did nothing to Trevor.  That is what is wrong in the NBA. I'm not saying Ray shouldn't get suspended I think he should get suspended 1 game.  But when somebody puts someone on a stretcher by initiating the play and the contact that player also has to get suspended if you are going to suspend Ray.

The difference is one was a basketball play, and the other wasn't.

I think the better comparison for Allen's elbow would be Odom's tackle of Ray last year.

Ariza was playing the ball, and unfortunately, Fernandez was in a vulnerable position, and ended up getting hurt.  The only intent on that play was to stop Fernandez from scoring the basket.  On the Allen play, it appeared that the intent was to hit the guy in the balls.

I don't think the way you keep a game clean is to only punish guys based on the results (meaning, if someone is actually injured).  You need to be punishing based on the action itself, even if the danger wasn't realized.

Ray needs the rest.

Varajeo sounds like a tool with his comments.

Does it bother anybody else that they suspend Celtics for stuff like this but not always everybody else?

Can you example of a comparable incident where there wasn't a suspension?

Has there been any Celtic on this current team who's been cheapshotted as much as Ray? Odom tackle and eye poke, Vujacic scissor kick, Oden and Martin shoving him out of bounds etc.

Since the Denver game I've been thinking Ray might snap one of these days after a hard foul. Its good it happened now where he's suspended for a fairly meaningless game. Hopefully people might think twice about picking on him in the future. And luckily this incident sounds much tamer than what I've been imagining.

Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

This is exactly what I have been thinking.  TP.  Hopefully people'll stop picking on Ray Ray.

I do not agree.   The Ariza play was a basketball play but he was the initiator, the player got hurt, it was a breakaway play which the NBA has made up rules to protect that sort of play, and Ariza's reaction after Rudy fell was not a basketball play.  Ray's play was not a basketball play, he was not the initiator, the player didn't get hurt, it was not a breakaway play, and Ray didn't have much of a reaction after the play.   So in my estimation Ariza did 4 things wrong and Ray did 1.

Does Ariza not being suspended count? Odom didn't get suspended for checking Ray last year did he?

Well deserved suspension.

What he said.

Good, Ray is a class act, but you don't deliberately pop a guy in the stones no matter what they just did to you.  He can sit out his game and we'll all welcome him back with open arms and crossed legs.

And what he said.

Yes he did. For two games if I recall correctly, at least one.

I think it was one, Faf, but he was definitely suspended.

Ray meant to elbo him, but not in the boys.
AV locked Allens arm against his body and swung him down on purpose, this is not a play but a T that got missed.
Allen reacted and got a 1 game suspension, no big deal.

ESPN is reporting it now.

Dumbest quote I've read in a long time:

The frizzy-haired Varejao had his own take.

"You don't hit a man in his [groin]," he said. "He doesn't like Brazilians or he doesn't like my hair."

How about, he dosen't like being thrown down and tea-bagged by a player with 1/10 of his value as a player and as a human being.

As far as I know, Ray Ray has never elbowed Leandro Barbosa in the nuts.  It must be the hair.   ;D

Thanks, illa.  I enjoyed this.

Ditto. The incident, and some of the responses to it on this board, are embarrassing. Pros don't respond like that, and Ray deserves to sit.

AV's stones were the ONLY thing Ray hit on Sunday.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

Andy is right though. You don't hit people in the nuts. That is so 2nd grade.

right because clearly in the video he knew where his elbow was going even though he was looking straight ahead .

If someone put his teabag on the back of my neck, you can bet i'd through an elbow backwards too, and if your twig and berries happen to be at elbow level, i guess you shouldn't have been standing over me.

but again, this is a non-issue. suspoend and move on, because thats what we do in todays nba.

I wonder if little whiny female dogs like Andy ever get down on there knees and thank the lord they weren't playing back in the 80's.

Bill lambeer, for example, wouldn't have thrown an elbow. He would have stood up and punched andy's teeth down his throat, then curb stomped him for putting his sack on his neck.

Hahahahahahahaha oh my god crownsy I was dying the whole time I read your post. TP.

You don't punch someone in the nuts... unless they drape their sack on you. Then they're just begging for it.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

judging from andy's reaction, ray either missed or andy is Andrea.

ray deserved to sit a game, and andy deserved the tech fine. league office got it right by there new punishment guidelines.
