Alright, my assumption is that if a "rookie" plays even 1 second of NBA basketball he is no longer considered a "rookie" and the following year does not qualify for ROY or Rookie 1st/2nd team.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? If this is the case don't you think reform is necessary?

  • Yup
I do believe that's the deal in the NBA (not so in baseball, but I think that's the only major league that works that way)
Yup

Yeah, I think that's correct, as well.  I'm not sure if pre-season basketball counts, though.

So JR, who has played under 8 minutes of NBA basketball and will not be able to chase one of these individual awards next season...

With Greg Oden being declared eligible I would say the pre-season does not factor in.

hmm I doubt he would have a chance to get any of those awards next season... Two words- Blake Griffin

While I would agree in guessing that the preseason isn't factored in, I don't think Oden even made it that far last season - he was headed under the knife by mid-September.

also JR neither has the playing time avaiable or NBA talent to get those awards anyhow.

Thanks for mentioning that, Steve.  That was my thinking in mentioning pre-season.  Oden only made it through Summer League, I think.

I wish they would expand the definition of "rookie", maybe one that reads "Anyone that has fewer than 1000 total nba regular season and playoff minutes logged before the start of the season"

1000?! That'd be like playing 12 mins a game one year then winning ROY the next
