All Time

Bill Russell 6 9"

Pippen 6 7"

Jordan 6 6"

Garnett 6 11"

Rodman 6 9"

Duncan 6 11"

Hakeem 6 9"

Payton 6 4"

Kareem 7 2"

David Robinson 7 2"

Dennis Johnson 6 4"

Lebron James 6 8"

Last spot was either Jerry West or Lebron but I would rather have Lebron on this team because he's more versatile.
anybody else belong on the Lisr for sure. Mutumbo, Ben wallace?

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
I think you're right on with most of the players you've picked.  The only pick I absolutely disagree with is Lebron.  He's had exactly one good-to-excellent defensive season.  He can't be on any list of all-time best defenders.  I'd replace him with John Havlicek, among many others.  For wings, Michael Cooper and Bobby Jones were great defenders (Cooper made 8 all-defensive teams, and Jones made 9).  Bowen deserves consideration, too.

Also, Dikembe needs to be on there somewhere.  He was a four-time DPOY.  Wallace was, too, although there are other centers on the list I'd take ahead of him.

Lastly, as a minor aside:  Hakeem was by no means 6'9".  He was a legit 7-footer.

Hakeem wasn't 6'9, assuming you're talking about Olajuwon and not Warrick or something.

Plenty of bigs on there too... Maybe a couple more guards/SF types? How about a Sidney Moncrief or Michael Cooper?

PG Payton Van Lier DJ
SG Moncrief Alvin Robertson Jordan
SF Pippen Cooper Bobby Jones
PF Russell Garnett Duncan
C Abdul Jabbar Olajuwon Mutombo

Is Lebron an all time great defender? I know he can't guard Paul Pierce. :)
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

I actually challenge you to dig deep about Hakeem the dream's height. I have heard him talk about it himself. And the Special on Hakeem maid it a point to say that he was only 6'9".

It was that he was that tall and the quickest most nimble, athlete by far at his height. I say 6'10" tops. Go o back and look at some old photo's with ewing a true 7 footer.

Also people thought Alonzo was 7 feet for a long time. And Bill Russell. I pictured them to be 7 feet. Until i found out they weren't.

Kevin Mchale needs to be needs to be right there on any all defensive team. He could guard 3 positions and was a great help defender and shot blocker. Before he broke that foot and played on it he was the best defender in the league. Ask Barkley or Wilkens.

Another name that should be batted around is that of Tom "Satch" Sanders.  According to many on those great Celtic teams of the '60s, he was the best man on man defender on the team.  That says a lot given that Bill Russell, John Havlicek, and K.C. Jones played on those teams too.

As much as I hate to admit it (I DEMAND negative TP) Kobe has a good defensive reputation.

Bruce Bowen?

I'm young, so I don't really have a good historic background on the greatest defensive players... But Ron Artest (minus all of his problems) has to be the best perimeter defender of this decade. Should he be on that list?

I have brought it up before but PLEASE doesn't any of you remember Don Chaney??

there is just no way i could have bowen before Chaney. Those celtcs teams with Cowens went 69, 66(silas) 65(havlicek) 65 (chaney) 63(white). nelson and westphal were off the bench. Don Chaney played any wing, not Hondo. Chaney was the one who shut the shooters down
