This may be a little premature, but the thought has occurred to me before. I think that Brian Scalabrine would make a really good coach some day. That said, I hope to see him back in Celtic green, but not until he is ready to contribute and do so from a good health standpoint. He needs to take his time and I am sure he has heard that before.

I have an acquaintance that has had multiple concussions from a long career in full contact karate. He always tried to be the tough guy and 'fight though' his injuries. He suffers now from erratic and severe headaches with nausea, mild seizures and sudden bouts of blurred/double vision.

All I can say is, that is not a way I would wish anyone to live.

It's really bad luck for Scal. If he misses the playoffs then it will be the second year in a row that his get his champion ring without playing a single minute ;)

I hope he gets healthy soon, those concussions are scary

Our version of Troy Aikman or Steve Young.  ;)

Scal will be back, he has no physiological brain damage. Once he's asymptomatic (and sooner or later he'll be), he's cured and can play again.

The problem with concussions is they don't completely understand what "cured" means.  Many times people become asymptomatic, but then are just a very mild concussion away from being even worse from before.

I agree that he will be back...I just wouldn't be surprised if concussions continue to follow him from now on, and ultimately lead him to call it quits, sooner rather than later.

There's no scientific evidence to make that a reasonable expectation. Persistent post-concussion systems are mostly a consequence of judicial systems that incentivate litigation. What can't be done is to return before the symptons have subsided, to avoid a SIS. Other than that, as long as there are no structural damages to the brain, it resolves by itself. The cumulative effect of 2 concussions is negligible (I'm assuming Scal doesn't play boxing in his free times...).

I think the key here is knowing when to come back. The 'cured' status is a subjective area, some people show very little in the way of symptoms and still have injury. Some people have extreme symptoms and show very little on CT and MRI. Point is, most all athletes are very competitive people and do not easily wait out their full rehab period. That is where the real trouble lies, the classic "coming back too soon" situation that proves the injury isnt fully healed.

If I had concussion problems, I would not want to play down low of offense or defense in a NBA game. :-\

Yeah, sportsmen shouldn't go back to activity as long as they have any kind of symptoms at all - no matter how little and infrequent they are. Suffering a concussion when still presenting symptoms from a former one can frequently end in a fatality. That's why they shut down Scal when he present symptoms - he never had a 3rd concussion.
