Celtics president Danny Ainge said his team will take part in the Orlando Summer League, tentatively scheduled from July 6-10 at the Magic's practice courts at the RDV Sportsplex. The teams - likely six - will play games that are closed to the public. The Celtics did not have a summer league team last year. Boston rookies J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker would be expected to play.
"I just think our guys could use the summer league experience," Ainge said. "Last year, Billy was hurt and with J.R. we were negotiating his contract during the summer. That kind of set them back a little bit. Summer league is important."

I don't really like the way Danny threw Giddens under the bus like that. Last year, the Celtics chose not to have a summer league team, to save approximately $200,000. They made that announcement in mid-March. It's not like they would have had a summer league team, but didn't because of the Walker and Giddens situation. I know Giddens didn't participate in that silly free agent scrimmage thing the Celtics held (which was completely useless), but I don't know that that made a huge difference.
It will be decent watching (or at least following) the guys get some run; if nothing else, it breaks up a long off-season. It'll be interesting to see if Semih Erden comes over to participate.
