Sam's Summer is the best widely available summer brew I know of. I like hoppier beets personally, but the Sam's Summer is pretty darn tastey and drinkable.

Seeing as how it is opening day... Does anybody know when sam summer comes out?

No idea, but it brings up an interesting question...what widely available (at least in Boston) summer (light, fruity) beer is best?

Sams Summer

Blue Moon

Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat (my personal favorite)

Other (I know I am forgetting some good ones)?

I tried the Leinenkugels some time ago, and liked it too. I'm also quite partial to Sam's Summer.

I miss Magic Hat #9 out here on the West coast, although Pyramid makes a good approximation. I believe Magic Hat acquired Pyramid, so perhaps they are using the same recipe nowadays.

Oh, and although it's not technically a beer, I discovered the joy of the michelada last summer. I wonder if Edgar has a recipe for that.

Im in the prep stages to make my own Brandy.  My GF's grandfather made his own with Everclear and Cherries.  Put them in a mason jar, have it sit in the sun for a couple of weeks and all that will be left are the pits and stems.

I will let you know how it goes, his version was delicious and quite strong.  Im hoping for the same.

How are you going to make your own brandy?

(I've seen people do the everclear thing..and personally it wasn't as impressive as I thought. One trick though is to use regular vodka, and in a mason jar put in quasi-mushed up strawberries, cover them with sugar, let them sit a day (the sugar jumpstarts their digestion) then add the vodka. Let sit for a month. I tried that and it was great.)

Trust me dude this is fantastic stuff, My girlfriends dad is translating the recipe from polish to english.  Its fantastic stuff.

It's funny her aunt is this tiny polish woman who talks about not needing to go to the doctors because she takes a flu shot every day, and its a shot of the brandy.

I will keep you posted as to the process and how it goes.  If i can replicate her Grandfathers brandy even to a minor degree you all will want to try it too.

But how are you making the brandy? Are you distilling wine or are you flavoring liquor?

haha..I was gonna say...distilling anything is risky business! I've got a buddy who is convinced he can distill his own moonshine (even bought a book on it)..and I was with him on it until he says "I need to borrow your pressure cooker..and by borrow I mean destroy."

Then I was like..'nah...its not gonna work."

I've never really been a fan of Brandy.  I think part of it might be that I have not had much higher end stuff, but what I have had has always been way too sweet, and just unpleasant.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good Brandy to try?  Preferably less than ~$40...

Remy Martin VSOP or Hennessy VSOP should be in the $40-$50 range.
