How can you have an all time fav song? If you enjoy music, you would start listening to new released music and not have a favorite, becuase you end up finding a song you love and keep listening to.

If you listening to the same cd everyday on your to work or school, you would get tired of it, even if it had your own all time favorite song.

So you have a favorite song only for a certain period of time...until you over use it and move onto different music.

drink that in

I disagree.  I always expand my music collection, but some songs really strike a chord (lame pun intended) with you, and you can listen to them often.  You don't put it on repeat and rock to it all day, that would ruin the song.  It's like a great movie; you can watch it every year or so and re-enjoy it.  Except with music it's more like every month  ;D

I went away this weekend, didn't have a chance to check the forums.  Going to have to go home and check out these songs after work.  Oh, and I forgot... I don't think the song is particularly meaningful, or well orchestrated, but I can and do listen to Journey Don't Stop Believing on repeat.  Often.

It's funny -- people really are different.   I have listened to basically the same 400-500 songs over and over for the last 30 years.  There are very few songs recorded after 1975 that have held my interest. Disco just about ruined popular music for me and nothing in the 80's, 90's, or 21st century has brought me back. I have 2 teenagers (18 and 14) who have done nothing to disuade me from my belief that music died in 1976 (with all due respect to Don McClean who insisted that 'the music died' with the death of Buddy Holly).

Before you take the above too seriously -- know that I realize that I am the narrow-minded buffoon in this discussion and I know there have been many talented musicians since the days of Sinatra, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, The Four Seasons, Ray Charles, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Herman's Hermits, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Guess Who, Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Moody Blues, Cat Stevens, Carole King and James Taylor.  But I just seem to be satisfied listening to my own classics over and over and over...

Like others have said, too hard to really nail it down, but this song (and it's b-side/remix version) takes up two of my top slots:

(And what do you all know, my favorite hip hop songs aren't actually from Wu-Tang, I'm a little surprised myself)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoonTgtAIvs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McxHlJearmY

And the rest of the stuff I listen to might surprise some people too.  Neo-soul from some underground artists.  So underground couldn't even find my favorite songs of theirs on youtube.  But just something about these songs.

Save Me by Alison Crockett, love the energy. (It's in her myspace playlist if anybody is really interested)  http://www.myspace.com/alisoncrockett

And then this other singer, Conya Doss, if you looked at the top played songs on my ipod, she takes up most of the slots, but Only Be Me (also in her myspace playlist) is probably my favorite, I just feel the lyrics in this one:
http://www.myspace.com/conyadoss

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I kinda of agree that saying your top 5 songs is hard. I mean I could easily name 5 songs I really like a lot, and I could name 5 songs I've really liked for a long time, but I hear new stuff all the time that just stays on my playlists.

Like right now Im listening to the John Legend Get Lifted CD from 2004...which is making me wanna listen to Musiq Soulstar from a couple of years later, and I really like tracks from both CDs...and I mean John Legend's disc is classic right away for me.

But that doesn't mean I appreciate them any more than any song on Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" (BTW..whenever anyone says anyone's vocals are "the best" and they aren't talkin about Marvin Gaye...they are WRONG.)

On that note, "Heard It Through The Grapevine" done by Marvin Gaye is one of the songs I'd tentatively put up there.

Man I guess I really should think about this....

EDIT: I mean there are tons of songs I'd like to put out there cuz they're "neat"...but I mean, 5 all time songs? thats just kinda impossible.

Going to take me awhile to come up with my five,,,but i have to agree about Marvin and the best vocals, TP.  I could listen to Abraham, Martin, and John all day.  I love his Soul Legends cd where he covers a bunch of motown greats including Cloud Nine and My Girl.

I cant wait for his bio-pic to come out next year.

  • Yup
Right now I'm sitting in my new "barn office" working on an email list for my biz.  I am smack dab in the middle of two decent speakers separated by about 4 feet on either side and listening to The Who's "Endless Wire".  I had a hard time getting into this one when it came out a couple of years ago, but I'm really digging it now.  Pete Townshend is simply amazing.  No Top 5'ers on here, but some pretty great bits of what makes the Who great.

Top 5 Who Songs:

Slip Kid
Eminence Front
Won't Get Fooled Again
Join Together
Squeeze Box

Some favorites of off Tommy are just bits and pieces...The last tune at the end of the first side...What is that one?
Yup

It's always refreshing to know I'm not the only person to like certain more obscure songs.  I'm a big fans of both of your top 2, not my top 5 material, but good stuff nonetheless.  Always nice to see people appreciate some of the more obscure stuff that hasn't been shoved down our throats by radio...

I haven't read the whole thread, but doesn't Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" deserve a place in this discussion?
