I would love to see Pierce get the MVP. It will never happen, he is not flashy enough, and not selfish enough to talk about it.
Thats interesting. I haven't seen one analyst that wasn't a Celtics analyst say that Paul Pierce should be mentioned when talking about MVP candidates all year long.
Obviously, he won't get it. I love Pierce, and have been a fan of his since he joined the celts over 10 years ago, but I would definately say Kobe, Lebron, and Wade deserve this award more than he does (and I honestly think it should be hands down Lebron this year). Should he be mentioned in the talks, like Legler said? Yes, absolutely. He is a top player in this league. But whether or not he should get it is a whole different story.
I agree, esp if your barometer is "how screwed would his team be without him." The Lakers and Celtics would suffer greatly to lose Kobe or Paul respectivly, but the Cavs wouldn't make the playoffs w/o Lebron.
Paul Pierce would be in the national MVP conversation if he was throwing powder in the air and posing theatrically on every play, he not showtime enough by nature, and that's what I like about him the most. To Paul, the only thing that has ever been important is winning, for guys like Lebron and Kobe it's always been Legacy first, winning second...
I completely agree with everything you just said. I find it amazing that these guys (Lebron, Kobe, Wade, etc.) get so much more attention than a player like Pierce, who has been consistently one of the best players in the league, year in and out. And there you said it, its all about putting on a show in the NBA nowadays. Pierce, partly due to his lack of athleticism, is not the type that will fill the seats of oppononet crowds and put on a show of windmill dunks and and alley oops. Rather, he is the type that plays efficiently every game, and plays to his advantages (size, shot, strength, iq). If its worth anything, though, I think the show he put on wednesday in the fourth quarter was a lot better than any dunk or alley oop.
