Tony Massarotti::  Well, if I'm not mistaken, Ray Allen is up after 2010, which gives the Celtics a max contract to offer in what will be arguably the greatest sports free agent class of all-time, in any sport. Garnett comes up in 2011. Pierce comes up in 2012. Looks to me like they're well-positioned to spend.

you are, as usual when it comes to the hardwood, mistaken tony. I don't expect reporters to get every question right, but we will still be over cap in 2010, and thus, we can not offer a max contract. If he wants to cover the celtics, doesn't maz have to know that they are well over the cap and will have no where near max dollars?

Just caught my eye after last weeks discussion about how sportswriters should stick to one sport, and not try to get into sports they don't truly follow. It hurts thier credibility.

NOTE: if i've missed somethign here, egg on my face and good job maz, but as i read his response, he has zero knowledge of the salary cap, something an average fan should know.

Terrible reporting.  Maz should read Celticsblog more often.     At least he doesn't claim to be a basketball guru, but it's irresponsible.

No, he was trying to say that since Ray's $17-18 million salary will be coming off the books after next year, the Celtics would have that much to spend on a free agent, which as we all know isn't true....yet he gets paid for this stuff.

Oh well.  At least he said "If I'm not mistaken", and didn't just yell loud and pretend like his word is bond.

Thats the good thing about Maz, if you told him that he was wrong he'd probably say "Oh Really?" and then inquire further. You won't find that a lot on EEI.

He is definitely off the mark on that comment.

Still, it will be a huge decision whether to trade Ray as expiring for some young talent and prospects or to to try and resign him for an affordable short term contract. Danny is in the hot seat all alone on this one. Our next decade's performance as a team could hinge on it IMO.
