I'll post you some gameplay trailers and the intro video when I get home, I think its the best MMO going. ITs much more "how well you play" based vs. "im level 70!!!"

also, being in a 60 on 60 fleet battle (or more, two mega corps went at it last year with 830 to 1102, heard it was a ton of lag, but fun) is awesome.

there are no levels BTW, though skills give you bonuses to what your trying to do, so obviously and older player can fly more advanced and bigger ships, and can fly them better, but if your in a cruiser (corellain corvet size) and you get in a bad way against a Battleship (star destroyer size) the battleship is going to win in a stright up fight, no matter what your skills are.

Of course, you can't fly a battleship, nor afford one right off the bat. you know what, im rambling, and not explaning the game well. here's the website if you want to check it out for now, I'll post some trailers when i get home and have tube access.

www.eve-online.com

the client is a free download and you get a 14 day trial. Be warned though, do the training missions. You are a starship captain, its vastly more complicated to just pick up and play than an mmo where ya just hack stuff.

anyway, rant over, back later with backstory and gameplay vids. if nothing else this game should have a thread like the other great mmo's. I mean it does have 500,000 subscribers, no wow, but certainly a highly succesful MMO. though the USA only makes up 25% (UK has something like 40%, they love it, and Europe in general is like 70% of the base.) likely due to the developer being in europe.

Ok, so to work off my anger at the miami loss, i put this together. Hopefully this will give people an idea what this MMO is all about, and mabey someone will take the free 14 game trail. If ya do, let me know, ill fly with ya.

So, lets start with this video, which is cool and will explain the backstory better than i can.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T84nrp08MWo

So, the game basicly revolves around you as a pilot in this new unieverse. You can litearly do anything under the sun for a living. Some mine minerals that make every item in the game. Some fly missions, (like quests) and collect NPC bounties. Some people run giant corporations. Some do exploration, and seek out new locations of dungenons, wormholes, and a ton of other cool stuff.

Some do research, improving the way things are built. Some build ships and weopens, some do trade and industry. Anything is open to you. Lets take a look at the game in action. This is some of the trailers made with in game footage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PhFz6P_8r4&feature=related

Thats all made with ingame, pretty much everything is done in space. when you are docked, you interact with the station, but your "avatar" is the ship you are flying. you can fly everything from a small fighter ship (what im currently flying) to a huge battle ship.

here's a pretty trailer of the new expansion. i linked to thier website, since the youtube vid i found was awful quality.

http://www.eveonline.com/download/videos/?type=2

click on the top trailer, new xpac revolves around exploring wormholes and finding the new race, the sleepers.

Anyway, thats all for now, feel free to ask questions. I personally love to PVP, both small scale fights and larger fleet battles, but you can play the game completely "care bear" as well. but for me, nothing beats going out with 4 or 5 buddies into non government held controled space and doing some fighting :D

but yea, free trial, cool to see any of the computer gamers give it a try, let me know if you do (or just liked the story, i really enjoy the lore.)

I'm aware of the WoW thread.  In fact, I created it.

When you make value judgments about something being the "best", you are asking people to disagree.  I'm not trying to tick you off, just stating my opinion, as you were.

I did not make any personal attacks (ie calling me a troll), for the record. I could share my opinion about you and your posts if you'd like.  I assure you my critique would be much more cutting.
God bless and good night!

this will be the last time i respond to you, since i know you thrive of trying to get a rise off people, and i don't want it in a thread simply to inform people of a products existance.

this is a simple "this is the game, here's the story, if you end up trying it look me up thread."

Clearly, you dont like it, and won't be playing. Great. the fact that you took one word "best" and try to justify a post that had no intended effect or content other than to try to start a back and forth ripping between me and you about WoW vs. Eve (which i won't be doing, for one, I really like Wow, and play it also, have had a priest since beta until about 2 months ago when i decided I was going to take a break, and for another, because they are completly diffrent games.)

Thats the defintion of trolling. If i walked into the wow thread and said.

"Played this game, Eve is way better"

Thats nothing but a troll post to riley up the people that may be reading the thread who like Wow. I guess you succeded, since i wasted two posts on it already, gratz.

For anyone else who reads, hope you at least enjoyed the vids, and feel free to PM me if you end up taking out the trial :D

If i were trolling you - I would've already succeeded.

Twice.

This isn't going anywhere.

I watched the videos and then went on ebay to check out some more. Im pretty engrossed in school and Fallout right now, but I did have some questions.

1) Is it only ship to ship combat?

2) Is there a legit storyline ala oblivion or is it all just one big world?

I've always stayed away from MMORPG's because I just flat out don't trust myself to not play them too much. I also just read the IGN review from 2003. This game seems like one I should avoid;

There's only ship to ship combat, as that serves as your avatar. walking around on the stations you dock at is thier next big xpac, supposedly, which they think will eventually translate into non- ship to ship combat.

it has a pretty good storyline if you want to do the player vs. NPC missions, and also it has kinda a player driven story.  The scope on that is that the middle of the galaxy is "high sec" where, outside of clans declaring a state sanctioend war on each other (which takes alot of in game money to maintain) players are not allowed to shoot at each other without getting killed by the "gaurds" if you will. That is where the Game's storyline takes place, and it is ever changing. this new xpac adds open war between the factions that the player can join up for, we'll see how that goes.

However, outside of what they call "high security", the game is very wild west. in 0 space, players can put up there own space stations, instead of computer controlled ones, with there own defenses and shops, ect, as well as claim sovergnty over a system. This leads to some pretty crazy politics, since it's only one server, and there is only so much real estate to go around out there. There was actually just a pretty major shake up where two of the largest player run corps ended a 4 year war on each other by one infultrating the other with a spy about 2 years ago who finally got up to the point where he could be in co-charge of the other, and he attacked them fromt he inside.

here's a good write up on it.

http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/65110

and here is the political map of outlying space, where players write the story, every color is a diffrent allaince of clans who work together to hold thier country if you will.

http://rdceve.19.forumer.com/a/eve-online-political-map_post4.html

big void in the middle is NPC space.

as to time crunch, that could be tough to be trying it out during, but it actually lends itself to casual play once your established because you dont have to be online to skill up, and you can play as much or as littl as you want.

for instance, im pretty time crunched myself this week, and im playing some COD5, so i havent gotten on in the last 2 days. But, im still making progress towards flying my new ship, since i have its skill, which takes 6 total days to train, going on my guy.

But if your ever bored, id give the trial a shot. I mean, games not going anywhere soon, been around 5 years and they just hit thier peak subscriber rate with the first "on the shelves" version of the game coming out.

Tip on that, do not buy the box in a store. They are putting it out to generate intrest here in the states, and it will be 30 bucks. The thirty bucks will be covering 2 months of time, not the client.

The cleint, they have so far said, will always remain a free DL. so, if you ever want to try it, DL the cleint for free and get the free two weeks to see if you like it, rather than buying the full 2 months that come as the box you'll be seeing in best buy march 13th.

Might as well demo it first for free rather than buy it and risk hating that they took your 30 bucks :D
