Golden State Will Waive Marcus Williams

Mar 10, 2009 11:31 AM EST

The Warriors will waive Marcus Williams this week.

Golden State traded a future number one pick for Williams last summer and he was never able to crack Don Nelson's rotation.

"It just wasn't a good fit," Nelson said. "I like him very much. It was a really tough situation and he was a model citizen. He worked hard and was a pleasure to be around. His style just wasn't my style. He's better in the half-court."

Is anyone else surprised by this?  There were a whole bunch of Celtic fans (not me though;D) who were upset that DA passed him up for Rondo.  I was never a fan of Williams, but I'm still surprised.  I thought with the exception of his poor defense, he looked like he might be a good player.

I was surprised as well.

When GState traded for him (a future 1st, no less), I figured a renaissance for Williams thanks to Nelson's uptempo offense.

Should the Celtics bring in him for a workout this summer?  He's a good offensive player and an excellent passer.  I know he wasn't a good defender, but I wonder if he can work in the Celtics system.

I was surprised that he never really got any time in Golden State after they traded for him.  I don't know what he was or was not doing in practice, but it was a little shocking to see him get a grand total of 53 minutes this year.

No, despite Williams' talent level, I still think that Rondo's backup next season needs to be a seasoned vet, not another project.

He can take Gabe's spot and we can still get a veteran later in the year for the playoffs if needed.

Funny, I just stumbled upon his name last night and couldn't believe he had seen so little time.  Why wait til now to cut him?

I really liked him, but there's got to be some baggage there.
Yup

For sure.  I have a friend who interns with the Celtics who said that when Williams came in for his draft workout with the team a couple of years ago, at he end of the workout he tried to steal one of those new NBA balls.

Wasn't he also a part of that laptop stealing thing a while ago while at UCONN?

He sounds like an idiot.

Nothing ever surprises me when it comes to roster moves for a team coached by Nelson.  He picks favorites and puts guys in the doghouse for seemingly no reason at all, and once he has made a decision on you, it is nearly impossible to change his mind.

If a guy with his supposed skill set (shooting, passing) cannot get burn in GS with Nellie, there is a good chance he just does not have what it takes to make it in the NBA. Remember when the Celts were criticized for not taking him? I may be wrong but I remember some grumblings. We got Rondo instead...

I was unsure if we should have taken Williams over Rondo after hearing Jay Bilas and just about every other expert say how bad the Celts messed up by choosing Rondo over Williams.  The guy definitely has talent but I wonder if he's just destined to be a journeyman loser. I know Don Nelson is strange, but Williams must have been really bad to never get any minutes over some of those stiffs that Nelson has played in the backcourt.

I still remember the thread from right after the draft calling picking Rondo over Williams the biggest mistake in the history of the franchise...

UConn fans are incorrigible.

That wasn't nearly as bad as the threads before the draft.  There were maybe 3-4 people on this site who actually wanted Rondo over Williams.
