Just saw the link on realgm; thought it was worth sharing.

Shaq retaliated to Stan Van's comments (that he flopped in a recent game) and he did not hold back at all...

Quote
Stan Van Gundy has made the mistake of engaging Shaquille O'Neal in a game of verbal warfare, as the center lashed back at the Magic coach before Wednesday's game.

Van Gundy said of Shaq's flopping, "“I was shocked, seriously, shocked. And very disappointed cause he knows what it’s like. Lets stand up and play like men, and I think our guy did that tonight.”

"He (Howard) came with the same old, stale Patrick Ewing move so I tried to stand there and take the charge," said O'Neal. "The new rules say if you come through, you fall. But as I fell, I realized that it was a flop and it reminded me of Coach Van Gundy’s whole coaching career. The one thing I despise is a frontrunner. First of all, none of his players like him. When it gets tough, he will become the master of panic like he did before and he will quit like he did before. The one thing I despise is frontrunners. Yeah, he’s got a young team playing good but don’t be a frontrunner. Him and his brother and even the legend on the bench ain’t done what I’ve done in my whole career. So flopping would be the wrong choice of words. "I just tried to take a charge. The (expletive) rules say you can’t stand there and get hit. You’ve got to fall. The (expletive) got the same old stinking move that Patrick Ewing has been doing his whole career. I went down, got up and didn’t complain. I see him and Stan complaining the whole game because they’ve got to. Remember, I’ve done more than him, his brother and Patrick Ewing. "Stan Van Gundy reminds me of a broke navigational system. He knows everything about everything but ain’t never been nowhere. Think about that. If I’m right here and I type in the address of where you’re going, I know where it’s at but I’m not going there. "When a bum says some (stuff) about it and I respond, you can (expletive) cancel that cuz I know how he is in real life. We’ll see when the playoffs start and he (expletive) panics and quits like he did when he was here (in Miami). And you (expletive) print it just like that. Do I look soft to you like you can say something and I’m not going to say something?

"Notice they didn’t play me straight up. We’ll see how far they go cuz I know Stan. I said this a long time ago but I was actually talking about him: 'When the general panics, the troops will panic. Like in business, when the head panics and takes out all his stock, what happens?

"All the players hate him. The players don’t even like him. I hate frontrunners. I really do. I don’t like any frontrunners. There’s a pecking order involved. I’ve been there six times. "I ain’t going to let no bum like him rip me and not say anything back. You can cancel that (expletive) all the way. Usually, I let (expletive) go. Not that. Not him. Hell no. "The rules say when a guy goes through your chest you’ve got to fall to get the call. It was a flop. You’ve watched me play for 17 years. I don’t play like that."

I never knew there was a hatred for SVG, he seemed like a very good and likeable coach (even before Ron Jeremy comparisons come into play). Has there been evidence of this before or is this just another Shaq tirade?

I didn't understand SVG's necessity to bring up the flop publicly the way he did. I immediately thought it was tasteless. Can't condemn Shaq for hitting back - he goes over the top, but that's pretty much par for the course for him. Anyway, this is the most interesting part of Shaq's statements:

I just tried to take a charge. The (expletive) rules say you can’t stand there and get hit. You’ve got to fall.(...)

The rules say when a guy goes through your chest you’ve got to fall to get the call. It was a flop.

Completely agreed. This is why I very often disagree with the criticism on flopping. Unless a guy falls, the refs don't call 95% of the charges.

Is that really true about the rule? I can't find where it says "you've got to fall".

Heh, you should see officiating here in Holland, especially the lower class leagues. Not only do they *NOT* call charges at random because they're too afraid to call them, you're also not going to get a call if you:

- move backward;
- turn away from the blow to protect/catch yourself;
- don't fall;
- haven't stood still for at least a full 2 seconds;
- jump;
- put your arms up in the air.

It's horrid.

The NBA is quite generous in calling charges, but yeah, even in there, it's crap.

What's Shaq's beef with Patrick Ewing?  He must'e said something about Shaq at some point.  That guy's got a memory like an elephant.

Of course it's not literally true; Shaq was being sarcastic. But that's what happens.

Hard to see if he's being sarcastic or not when he's throwing F-Bombs all over the place hehe.

I don't quite understand Van Gundy's complaint. Shaq flopped once. He didn't flop the entire game, he flopped once. To pick out one flop and say that Shaq was flopping hurts his credibility.

If Shaq DOESN'T flop, he's never going to get a charge call on anyone because there isn't anyone in the league who can knock him over!

I think there's a difference between being in position, getting hit, and letting your body fall (just showing the [dang] blind refs that YES, there was a foul!) versus falling down without getting hit.  If the offensive player runs into you, and you're in position, the refs ought to call the charge regardless of whether the defender falls down or not.  If you start calling charges right, 95% of the "flopping" that exists in the league will cease (the 5% representing Ginoboli).

You are absolutely, totally and utterly, dead wrong.

Ginobili flops a heck of a lot more than 5%

;)

just another reason to hate this guy. I have always hated him since he came into the league. And then it became worse when he called tommy out for not giving him a vote for rookie of the year. Shaq was the worst one of the worst things to happen to the league. Funny that he rips Ewing for stale moves, like he has a variety besides down low dunk or short hook. He tries to sound like hes so great but if the game was called like it should, he would be just another big fool on the court. >:(
Back to wanting Joe fired.

this is awesome. you know why? jeff van gundy is gonna come to the rescue. shaq is one of the most dominant players in the history of the league. short on talent when compared to someone like hmm. patrick  ewing. WHAT THE HECK did ewing do to shaq? wow. what a loser. he wants to talk about quitting? well how about letting your team down by getting fat? youtube shaq when he was younger. we all get naturally heavier but he should have had a build more closely resembling howard( i don't think he could have been THAT ripped  but close). i truly think shaq was equally to blame for the kobe feud. his go could'nt take it either. he's full of bad taste with the whole "how does my arse taste" stuff.he badmouths former teammates,coaches. now he's kissing kobe's ass looking to go back to l.a. FRONTRUNNER? shaq looks like a front runner to me. i didnt understand what he meant calling van gundy one. i know what he meant but.. arggh forget it. i just can';y wait for jeff van gundy. he won't let that stand. that's his bro.

i hate kobe (in the sports sense). but there will be two scenarios where i root for him. one is in the olympics.the other is ,hopefully in the 1st round of the playoffs, kobe slamming on shaq's head and letting him know it. i really would like to see kobe eliminate shaq and have some words for him. kobe is already known for being a bad temmate. shaq still has the wool over almost everyone's eyes.
