2 years $45M

...and how much did he have left on his contract with the Sox?

how much did he gain by pulling his baby act?

I think he had two options at $20 million each.

I think he had two options at $20 million each.

40 million vs 45 million

then calculate how much Boras gets -- a total wash.

Well, I don't think he left the Sox so much because of money.  I think he got sort of restless, and wanted to move on.  The recent, protracted contract negotiations are more due to Boras, I think.

He 100% left for money. Money is why he picked up Boras last year, money is why he said all the "nice" things about retiring a Red Sox and money is why he fought his way out of here after he and his handler realized that the Sox were not going to pick up his contract.

The irony is, is that he [messed] up by being such a baby that he cost himself more money than he would have earned.  There was never another team wanting Manny's services and LA had to have him to put asses in the seats.

What's the over under on when he quits?  I say August.

well, he's waffled on wanting out for years and it sounds like Boras got in his ear promising hundreds of millions that never came to pass (in part due to the sudden turn of the economy?)

just a sad situation all around - I loved watching him play, but I hope we win a title without him

Have to assume he wont quit till next year (unless the market comes way back).  As you said, no one else wanted him at that money, and that likely wont change in a year.  he will quit after next year.  (all of that is assuming that the second year is an option as has been reported all along)

also, Boston was never the place for Manny.  He doesnt want fans to recognize him...which was always going to happen if he went out anywhere near Boston.

In LA, he wont be 'bothered' by fans.

Manny is and was a great player...the only sad thing is when you wonder how truly great he could have been if he 'cared' for 162 games a year, every year.

100% agree.  The funny thing is, if the smoke clears from the steroids and Manny is not on the list of 103, he may end up being the greatest skilled player of this era, but....he'll always have the but.

apparently Manny hasnt signed yet.

many sources have rejected that they have agreed.  Additionally, the ESPN article now says they are close rather then that it is done.

Good point.

I still claim that would be Griffey (had he not gotten injured 8,000,343 times)

The worst part is with all this drama, he'll prefer never spend a penny of money from this contract. He has enough money at this point to live three manny lives. This was all just a gigantic waste of time

I hope for his sake that he signs soon and plays well.  I never had a problem with Manny.  He was (is?) a frustrating player because he plays at 95%, not 100%.  But I don't feel that Boston got a raw deal with him, so hard for me to feel bitter or anything like that.  It was clear that Boston wanted to trade him for a few years, clear Manny wouldn't mind being traded, finally a situation that benefited both sides worked out...

This is clearly the greatest signing of all time. To get the 3rd best hitter in the league for 45 Mill is a bargain to say the least. There has to be a boatload of teams regretting not throwing 60 Mill/3 years out there. The Dodgers just went from last to first in the NL West.
