Marbury and KG Were Best Friends

This is an old SI puff piece about Steph and KG. I was about 12 at this time and although I was a Celtics fan, always rooted for these two on the wolves, especially Marbury. I loved his game and the chemistry he had with KG. I never realised how close they were however. They were genuinely best friends. Obviously, it wasn't too long after this that Steph bolted town and forced his way out of Sota leaving KG high and dry. That obviously deteriorated their relationship immeasurably seeing how close they really were prior.

Not sure how much everyone has talked about this but if there is one guy that can get through to Steph and get the best out of him it is KG. That can be said about alot of guys in the NBA, but what these two had was a once in a lifetime situation. Here's to second chances.

Were is the key word...as far as I know they havent been close and have barely talked since Starbury left minny and Stephon was extremly jealous of KG.

Understood and agreed. Reading this just makes me a little more optimistic that KG can get in the clouded, confused head of Starbury and maybe remind him of when they were younger. You know... before he completely lost his mind.

They were very tight.  I lived in SC (where KG is from, he visited my school to hang out with an old girlfriend my freshman year of college) and I know a bunch of people who saw KG and most of the time Marbury (who is not from SC obviously) was with him.  He'd just been drafted my freshman year of college so he didn't know him like that, but every story every year after that until the split wherever KG was spotted in SC, Marbury was there as well.

Its funny that this thread isn't  getting more love - that story really defines a much deeper relationship than simply being teammates with talent and promise gone a rye.

I'm sure the separation strained their relationship, but at one time they were more than teammates and there remains the real possibility that an older and more introspective Marbury may very well regret the path he chose to follow.

Marbury has seen nothing but bad times and big losses since he broke up the tandem that could have been and this is a shot a true redemption - the chance to once again lace 'em up with his childhood friend and get a crack at the 'chip for real.

I put a great deal of stock in personal relationships and this shows me that despite all of Marbury's short-comings, there is hope that he can be reached, can be influenced for the greater good.

If KG can put aside past resentment and Marbury has true regret for past decisions, this could work out much, much better than the sum of their respective games would add up to.

I think we had a much, much bigger need at the wing....even bigger with a possible Scals concussion. so that concerns me.

but like we said yesterday, Mar has more skills than probably anybody that was available to us  so far. so, yeah, this could work out. I just hope when Mar looks at GPA he's noticing Rondo in between him and them.

the Big 3 and Mar are all about the same age, so on some level he must be looking at him and them as the Big 4.....I don't think it's possible not to. It's the proverbial kid in the candy store....the question is how he will deal with it...

anyway, what the heck are we going to do about our backup wing? we can't be throwing Mar at guys that are 6'7"+....

I hope you're right, and that maturity allows them to revisit their old friendship.  Because it was a NASTY breakup.  The other thing that I haven't seen posted around here lately is the venom that they spewed at each other when Steph was with the Suns.  Quick search...and here's a recap and some highlites of some of their back-and-forth:

It's just a lack of maturity...really. he simply never grew up. Let's hope there is some kernel of self-awareness that is part of him coming here.
