Barkley pleads guilty in DUI case
ESPN.com news services

Charles Barkley pleaded guilty to drunken-driving charges in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday and will serve time in jail, court records show.

The TNT basketball analyst and former All-Star faced two misdemeanor charges of DUI from a New Year's Eve arrest in Scottsdale. He also pleaded responsible to a third charge of running a red light, according to KTAR Radio.

Barkley will serve five days in jail, must enter an alcohol awareness program and was fined more than $2,000. Under Arizona law, he'll also be forced to install an ignition interlock device on his vehicles. He starts serving his sentence March 21.

Barkley, 45, had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Arizona when he was pulled over.

Barkley took a six-week leave of absence from his job with TNT but returned recently after apologizing for the incident.

"I think that a DUI is unacceptable," he added. "That can't happen and I've got to challenge other people, not just celebrities or jocks. You have to really think before getting behind the wheel after you've been drinking."

I still like Charles, I really do.
Call me a sap, but I love my kids more than anything!

Everybody makes mistakes, nice to see a public figure actually step up and say "Yeah I did it. I was wrong. It's my fault. Not anyone else's."

That being said, he still shouldn't have done it. Dumb mistake.

By the way, what's an ignition interlock device? I'm showing real ignorance I'm sure, but I just don't know what that is.
"Let me call him," Floyd said.

The man shook his head. "O.J. doesn't give out his cell," he said. "He'll call you."

You blow into a breathalyzer before it allows you to start the car. It's installed in your car if you've had prior DUI convictions. (At least in MA)

An ignintion interlock is basically a breathalyzer rigged to your ignition.  You have to pass the breathalyzer (at like .02 or below) in order for the engine to start.  I think some models also randomly beep while driving and you have to pull over and blow into them or else the car shuts off.  You usually get em for multiple or extreme DUIs - Barkley's was probably an extreme.  This is the part where I'd like to point out I don't know this from personal experience - a guy who worked with my brother explained it all to me (over beers, of course) one night.

I'm also pleasantly surprised by how Barkley's dealing with this.  His general openness about his habits seem to be helping him deal with them.  Now we'll see if he's just good at talking, or if he can actually clean up.

They could also do one of those commercials with him calling Dwayne Wade from the slammer.

Maybe he can loose some weight in jail.

Okay, bad joke... I don't view him any less. A lot of athletes and people in general drink and drive... he was just unlucky enough to get caught.

I like Charles. He was seriously apologetic for his mistake... Sounded sincere.
Plus he was mortified when KG injured his knee!

I know I have said this before Jick, but you have outdone yourself...

That is one of the funniest things I have heard in a very long time!

TP to you.

If the car can shut-off while being operated I'd say that's a pretty big road hazard.

Met a guy a couple months ago who had 3 DWI's.  In Ohio at least, they make him wear an ankle bracelet that detects alcohol in his sweat.  I don't think he's allowed to drink AT ALL, forget if he is driving or not.  Also told me that after he got off work (he was a bartender so I imagine this is late), he was required to be within 20 feet of his home phone.  I don't really understand how that works, maybe some sensor that pings off of the phone line.

They have all this complicated stuff, but can't get a bus that runs up my street past 10PM.

As far as Chuck... one of his most likable qualities is his occasional humility.  Not surprised he's owned up to this.  5 days in jail has to be hard for him - how many signatures are celebrities required to give per hour?

Despite him being respectable FORMER NBA player, I think he is probably the most arrogant person I have seen on TV.  I am not sure if the jail time will do him any good as it will probably be a probation due to his status in society.  Personally, they could lock him away and throw away the key too!  ::)

I love it.  Maybe Charles will cease all his political commentary from here on out.   Did you know Charles was thinking about running for office...  This is the guy that spit on a girl during a game and threw a few drunk patrons threw a window.  This is type of intellect we need on the Hill.

I would pay to see him call the biggest guy in there a knucklhead. I just wish I could get the image of him spooning with his cell mate out of my head

I really hope when Charles comes back they play the "Oz" theme music every time he tries to talk.
