I think the C's have to go with Moore unless they are absolutely convinced that Joe Smith will be bought and will come here.  It's too big of a gamble to let Moore go and then have the Bobcats not buy out Smith or have him go somewhere else.  The C's cannot go into the playoffs with Powe, Davis, and Scal as their only big men on the bench.

from john hollinger's latest chat:

Joe, RI: Does Joe Smith get bought out and go to Boston now?

John Hollinger: It would appear that way. OKC can save itself a few ducats with a buyout, and the Celtics and Smith would be ecstatic to join up for the league minimum.

*if this is the case wait on joe smith

Interesting - thinking out loud - I hadn't thought of that. If Pruitt is up to handling backup PG duties (still unknown methinks), then it could work. But we'd still have a hole at the backup 3 spot. I guess we hope Tony is healthy in time. Hmmm...I think I'd rather have Marbury than both of them, but having both would be good insurance in case Perk gets hurt (not predicting it, but let's be real - he has a history of shoulder problems).

What do we need six big men (plus Scal) for, though?  Especially when we're hurting at guard?

here was the trade for nocioni

Are the C's getting Nocioni, and who are they giving up.

John Hollinger: Apparently not. Deal would have been Allen, Scalabrine, Giddens and O'Bryant (Big Baby might also have been in it). It was about salary neutral for 2009 so Kings didn't feel any urgency to do it -- if Nocioni plays well they might get better offers in summer or next year to unload that contract.

I'd take Moore but like all of us prefer Smith.

Mandy Moore is hot.

Cleveland will outbid us for either Moore or Smith, likely Smith, and we will be left with second choice. Face facts.

Not only have you confused facts with predictions, but you have omitted a significant (IMO) component that actually IS a fact - Joe Smith's relationship with KG. I don't think it would be a stretch to think that that friendship could convince Smith to take less money to come to Boston. Joe Smith seems like he'd really fit in well with the C's off the court - hanging out with the big three and stuff. I just don't see where he's fits in (off the court) with the Cavs. I just think the pull of being around people you're comfortable with (and having a great shot at a title) is stronger than the pull to make some extra cash (and also having a nice chance to win a title) - maybe that's just me.

we have some cash and cap room, the cavs owner isn't as cashed up as he once was, do they have the full mle available?

If Boston could sign Moore, Smith and Marbury while releasing say....Gabe Pruitt, would that be the ideal scenario.

Rondo/Marbury
Allen/House/Allen/Giddens
Pierce/Scal/Walker
KG/Joe Smith/Leon
Perk/Moore/Baby

I think that would about guarantee a championship if the C's could actually not get cancer from Marbury. Is his type of cancer contagious by the way?

Here's what the Cavs have done since the offseason that may, or may not, have involved MLE money:

2008-07-16     Cavaliers     Daniel Gibson          re-signed to a 5-year contract extension
2008-09-06     Cavaliers     Darnell Jackson          signed second round pick
2008-09-12     Cavaliers     Delonte West          re-signed to a 3-year, $12.5M contract (third year is team option)

Gibson: may have been Bird Rights, so no MLE required
Jackson: third year of contract is guaranteed, which would require some MLE money (less than $900K)
West: may have been Bird Rights, so no MLE required

I'd need someone to verify this, but it looks like the Cavs have virtually the entire MLE to offer Smith, et al.
