The academy. From the oscars: "First, I would like to thank the academy". I was having this argument with my fiance last night, that they give extra points to a movie if it was based on a different era/country.
For example: Slumdog millionaire. That movie would have absolutely sucked if the actors would have been of the same skill level and the situations that the movie was based in 2003 Utah.
Frost Nixon: I didn't watch it, but it was in a different decade.
Milk: Same as Frost Nixon for me.
The reader: Miserable movie. My fiance loved it. It was the longest 2 hours of my life. If that movie was set in 2000's it would have bombed.
Curious Case of Ben Button: Same as Frost Nixon and milk.
I would dare to say (because I'm too lazy to research) that 80% of the movies nominated for best picture are based on a different era/country.
2001 A Beautiful Mind - different era
Gosford Park - different era/country
In the Bedroom - i think it based on current/usa
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - definitely not this era
Moulin Rouge! - different era
2002 Chicago - different era
Gangs of New York - different era
The Hours - 3 different time frames so i won't count this in the percentage
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - different era
The Pianist - different era
2003 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - different era
Lost in Translation - different country, but i'm not going to count it as different
Master and Commander: different era
Seabiscuit - different era
Mystic River- same era/country i think
2004 Million Dollar Baby - same era/country
The Aviator - different era
Finding Neverland - different country
Ray - different era but i'll count it towards this era
Sideways - same
2005 Crash - same era/country
Brokeback Mountain - same era/country
Capote - different era
Good Night, and Good Luck. - different era
Munich - different country
2006
The Departed - current/and same country
Babel - different countries but i'll count it as US
Letters from Iwo Jima - different country
Little Miss Sunshine - same country/era
The Queen - different country
2007
No Country for Old Men - different era, but i'll count it as US and same era
Atonement - different country
Juno - same country/era
Michael Clayton - same country/era
There Will Be Blood - different era
2008
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - different era
Frost/Nixon - different era
Milk - different era
The Reader - different country/era
Slumdog Millionaire - different country
So 40 movies: Only 14 movies were based within the last 30 years or so and in the US. Of those 14, 2 of them were actually based in another country but were so "American" that I didn't count them.
So my 80% was off, but 65% of them were based on other countries, or another era. I'm not saying this is wrong, but it does seem biased. Sorry for hijacking this thread.
