It's not like Nocioni is a crap player. Yes, his contract is a year longer than Salmons'. But Salmons was both a bit of a cancer and also impinging on the development of Garcia at the SF slot. This balances their roster a bit.

Nocioni can fit in at PF, either starting or first big off the bench. Lots of hustle and physicality for a young team.

Salmons was... a bit of a cancer...

Where did you hear that?  I've never heard that about Salmons.

Here's one random internet forum where Kings fans say he's *not* a cancer:

Assuming Sacramento cuts Simmons Ruffin Diogu:

2009/2010: Salmons+Miller = $17.7M vs. Noc = $7.5M
2010/2011: Salmons = $5.8M vs. Noc = $6.9M
2010/2011: Salmons = $0M vs. Noc = $6.7M

It is a pretty simple tradeoff that the Kings are making, and one that makes sense if a team is pressed for cash.  Kings get a $10M break next year, bringing their total salary to somewhere in the neighborhood of $56M (and potentially avoiding luxury tax by doing so).  True they have to pay more in 2010/2011, but their total salary is so low then, that is doesn't matter.  Plus, if they had resigned Salmons at that point, they would essentially be paying that amount anyway (assuming he is resigned for about the same money as Nocioni).

Celtics fan for life.

Exactly.  Its basically a pay now or pay later proposition.  Glancing at the roster, they're still dropping some pretty significant salary numbers in the next couple of years.  Guys like Bobby Jackson, Kenny Thomas, and Mikki Moore all coming off.

"Cancer" may be too strong a word. But, I do remember reading reports of him being unhappy about not getting not enough touches once Martin came back from injury. I'll see if I can hunt those down.
