ESPN.com reported early Monday that the Hornets -- who are looking to move Chandler mostly for financial reasons -- were in talks with the Thunder on a trade that would net the expiring contracts of forwards Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox.

The true goal of todays NBA outside the few teams that are true contenders.

Wow...What a bummer of a season for New Orleans after showing so much promise last year.

With the way Chandler has played this year (when he has even been able to get on the floor), this trade probably makes them a significantly better team for the rest of this year.  Smith and Wilcox are both significantly better than all of the Hornets bigs, other than West.

This could actually be some bad news for Celtics fans.

I think it's unlikely Smith gets bought out if this deal goes down. New Orleans could actually use him if they are hoping for a playoff run this season (extra gate revenue).

If the owner is in save mode, I can see them trying to buy one of them out.

Is there any way Ainge could leech off this trade? I know it's trade deadline time, but I love the idea that us opening up a roster spot somehow has to do with this potential trade.

I don't think so.  The salaries match up so well.

Are you kidding!!!?? Now we get to get Posey and Smith in the same deal!!! YAHOO!

Sorry, just wanted to be the first to propose it.

I think that's probably wishful thinking - the owner gets to sell this as an upgrade AND a cost cutting move - I think they hang onto both bigs and we are out of luck

From what I understand the concern was that next year they would be in the luxury tax.  I really can't see them buying one of these guys out (who could help them make significantly more playoff revenue), unless they basically refuse to report.

Doubtful. Ainge could use the trade exception generated by the Cassell trade to take on Sean Marks or Melvin Ely, saving New Orleans a little coin. That's about it.

{Edit: I think those guys are both on minimum salaries, which don't have to abide by CBA guidelines. So Ainge could offer to take those guys on without having to use the TE.}

Yeah this stinks- no way does Smith get bought out, especially if he's intent on signing with the Celts.  Well Byron Scott will try his hardest not to allow that.

Noooooooo my hopes for the Cassell trade!  What are we going to do with that free roster space now?  What if someone else pays Sam I Am a bunch of money to figure out how to thwart Rondo?  Darn me and my Celtics related paranoia.

this deal is done. and to jeff's point we will certainly not be seeing Smith in any other uni but a Hornets uni this year.

Then why are the Thunder taking him on?  They are not exactly a contender.
