Too bad they didn't think of that before they let Posey go.  And failed to replace PJ.  The Rose-or-Rondo question has to be considered in the context of today's team.

I'd do the deal.  Kudos to Brick for an intersting question.  My rationale is that Rose is sooooo good that the transition wouldn't be that bad, plus, he can actually hit a jump shot.  That can take a team a long way. 

Rondo is subjectively my favorite player in the league, but Rose is the whole package.  I'd roll the dice.

Rondo is the perfect PG for the big three. Chris Paul is the only PG I would take ahead of Rondo for this team.  He can penetrate at will, learning to run the fast break to perfection, plays great D, and is the best rebounding PG since Kidd.  Yes, his J needs more work, as well as his foul shooting. But I think he his progression in 2.5 years is incredible, and he will only get better. He is still a pup. I love Rondo.

Am I the only one that thinks Rose is overrated?  He puts up good numbers on a bad team, and his handle is suspect - I've seen the Bulls run him at the 2 so he didn't have to bring the ball up against pressure.  He plays no defense.  He's been criticized for his lack of floor leadership - whereas good point guards run the team on both offense and defense, Rose is quiet.  His jumpshot still isn't on the "strength" side of his scouting report, even though it is better than Rondo.  Other than that, the only thing he has on Rondo is size.  Rondo's a better dribbler, better passer, much better defender (Rose doesn't play defense in Chicago), better floor leader, and perhaps most importantly short-term, he's already accustomed to playing with the team.

If I were Danny, I'd ask for Ty Thomas for Scal or Powe. He's the best stopper for LBJ and Kobe.

how do you figure this would make us better next year? GPA would be a year older, you don't know how long or if rose (who is much more of a scorer than rajon as opposed toa  play maker) would fit in as a fourth option.

more likely, if you did this trade, you'd end up with derrick rose and whatever we've reloaded with in 3 years.

In summary, if im building a team in a vacuum,  and this came up, do i do this trade? without blinking.

If i have a limited window and my current PG has proven he's great for my current set up? nope.

Agreed.  I started a trade thread a few weeks ago "trade for Lebron stopper" which was a trade to get Ty Thomas.  The thread sort of went the way of "no one can stop Lebron".  But I saw Thomas do an excellent job on Lebron, not stopping him, but making things very difficult for him.

John Paxson and Larry Bird, I believe if I remember correctly, are not the best of friends dating back to when Paxson came to the team while Bird was recovering from back surgery. I don't think Bird would answer the phone if he knew it was Paxson and neither should Danny, who is a friend of Bird.

I dont think its in either teams best interest to black ball itself from doing deals with certain teams, especially if its just because the other teams GM didnt like the other GMs friend 20 years ago, its not good for business.  Seems pretty absurd.

There have been people that have worked with each other in the NBA that have worst pasts than Ainge and Paxson, I dont think it would be a stretch to say they wouldnt have a problem doing a deal together.

I'm keeping Rondo.  Not because I don't love Rose and his upside.  I like that.  But Rondo has got better defense, better rebounding, and most importantly he knows how to run a championship club and he knows how to run the Celtics offense.

Do you think that Rose who hasn't been here and doing it for the last 3 years would be able to command the respect of the big 3?  I don't think so.

If we are starting from scratch and building teams, then yeah I'd take Rose.  But with a championship on the line this year, I'm sticking with Rondo.

how many times have I seen on this post "the team plays well when Rondo plays well"?  Rose is unbelievable talent, but not a fit for this team.  We are currently playing for a championship, its not much of a stretch to think without Rondo (esp with a rookie in his shoes) we are not playing for a championship.

Well, wasn't a similar thing said about Rondo before last season? Rose is flat out better than Rondo and is going to be one of the best players in the league within five years. Can the same be said for Rondo?

Celtics are not waiting for going to be right now. 

Rondo gives them a better chance at winning this season.  Rose gives them a better chance of being good in the future. 

With the age of Pierce, KG and Allen; which of these are more important, winning now or better in the future?
