Maybe I'm a little late to the party, but I picked up a copy of Peter May's book, "Top Of The World" - the story of the turnaround of the Celtics to become league champions.

If you are into the "behind the scenes" story of a sports franchise (like I am) you will thoroughly enjoy this book.  In one sitting I read the first 4 chapters and found it very interesting.

There were so many things that could or could not have happened that it's amazing to consider.

Again, my apologies if this has already been mentioned (or if this thread may be in the wrong area).  I'm a Celtics' fan who lives in Florida and don't have immediate access to a lot of you guys do who live locally.

But I HIGHLY recommend this book.  Even if you are not a Peter May fan, his thoughts are a fun read.  This is the first book I've read that reminded me of these kinds of books when the "original" Big Three played...

hey AJ,

Good to see some thoughts on Top of the World.  If you're interested, I actually reviewed the book in the Daily Babble when I read it in late November:  http://www.celticsblog.com/2008/12/1/675990/house-chatter-highlights-t

As you'll see, my reaction to the book is a bit more mixed than yours - but I still thought it was worth the read, and I'm glad to see others enjoying it.

Good call on "Top of the World" i'll have to pick up a copy.

I just started reading Rick Pitino's (I know sacreligious almost) "Rebound Rules 2.0" The art of success. It is basically a motivational book but chronicles his life during and after he coached the Celtics up until last college season. Its a pretty good read and offers some insight into his seasons with the Celtics including a conversation he had with Jim o'Brien the night before Pitino resigned as head coach. A good read.

that's funny...i saw that book today as well (today's my off day at work so i went to barnes and noble - love that place).  i read the first couple chapters and it was interesting to see pitino's thoughts on his failures with the celtics - he was pretty transparent, and both humble and (i suppose) humiliated.

steve...GREAT review!  somehow i missed that.  you were spot on with his lack of "depth" on some things that do leave you wanting more.  i've only read 4 chapters thus far and i can see what you're saying.

i thoroughly enjoyed May's book "The Big Three" from several years ago, and loved McCallum's book "Unfinished Business" about the (I believe) 1992 Boston Celtics' season.

but thanks for the link to your review!

no problem, AJ, always happy to chime in.  As I mention in the review, I think part of it is that given how much I love books like that, I went into a *Celtics*-centric one expecting the world...and I think we're to some degree bound to be disappointed by a book like that when it's about our team, and we know even more details (having lived through it and pored over them 24/7 all year) than could possibly be expected to fit in the book.

That said, please do let me know what you think when you've gone all the way through if you get a chance.

I am halfway through this book right now and I highly recommend it.  I am not a big Peter May fan, but I am thoroughly enjoying this book.  And, if you like this book, you should read The Last Banner  about the 1986 championship.
