I get shredded every summer and bulk up every winter, and I drink a lot of booze.  You can get shredded and still drink, but you really have to be super careful of the food you eat while you are drinking.  I know beer goes well with pizza and stuff, but if you eat veggies and lean protein while drinking it won't set you back too much.

Drinking and dieting does not work.

3500 calories = 1 pound
2500 calories Avg man maintain = 2500 Calories

   3400
 -2500
---------------
=  900 (9 beers on a friday night)

900 x 4 (2 weekends) = 3600

3600/3500 = 1.03 lbs gained is an 8 day period. This will add up quickly.

Conclusion

- eating less to drink will rob your body of necessary protein, good carbs and fat.

- Drinking on top of normal day intake will result in weight gain.

As long as you cut it down to just 1-2 times a week you can still manage some pretty good weight loss.  I dropped 10 lbs in the 2 weeks after new years, despite a vegas trip and a rough weekend, mostly through similar techniques as Jsaad...although to compensate for the calories in the alcohol I drink nothing but diet sodas.

You shouldnt drink any soda at all.  Numerous studies show that 'diet' isnt any better for you then regular soda.  The fake sugar and chemicals essentially 'trick' your body.

people aiming to lose weight should stop drinking any soda, diet or not.

I don't know, I've seen a definite improvement from the switch, but that's simply calorie wise.  As far as the impact of the sugar replacing chemicals, I can see how that's just as bad as the normal sugar content.

I drink 2 cans of Diet Pepsi Max a day and follow it up each can with 40 Oz's of water. I find that works fine.

Here is a brief article talking about the negative effects of the diet soda.

http://calorielab.com/news/2005/06/12/diet-soda-drinkers-most-likely-to-be-obese/

It isnt the article I originally read (which was in the NY Times I think, but I will keep looking for that one.)

For people making drastic eating changes in order to lose weight, avoiding soda is one very helpful, fairly easy (in my opinion, at least compared to food) change.

EDIT: Two more articles that are worth reading:

http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20050613/drink-more-diet-soda-gain-more-weight

Interesting stuff, but it seems like as long as you can control your cravings caused by the artificial sweeteners you should be ok.  Thanks for pointing that out though - I didn't know that.

Ack - either those researchers or the journalists who did the writeups need to relearn the whole "correlation does not equal causation" thing.  Very dishonest of them to say more diet soda consumption increases your chances of being overweight - all their results show is that people who drink more diet soda tend to weigh more, which could happen for any number of reasons.

Congrats on the diet JSaad, I did a similar diet from about 2001-2005, and am now trying to lose some of the 15 lbs I put on over the last few years.  I flat-out refuse to give up beer though, but I only drink a beer or two a few nights a week, so I don't think that's the biggest factor.  My gummy bear addiction will probably be getting the axe instead.

Congrats on the Diet and Loss Jsaad, losing weight isnt hard to do, its the motivation to lose the weight every day and fighting temptation that is hard.

When I went into college I was at my playing weight of 205 and 6% body fat and in great physical shape.  By the time I had left college I had grown to a very sexy 250 pounds and probably 20+% body fat. It wasnt a cute site.  I started to eat right and workout often.  I went from 250 to a very slim and lean 185 in a little over a year.  I have since put weight back on and I am now back to 202 and about 10% body fat.  I am 6'3" and now 31.

Lastly about diet sodas. Very bad for you.  The human brain uses glucose(sugar) as its energy and when the body is lacking sugar it exhausts the body and creates sugar cravings.  Okay so when you eat a naturally occurring sugar, fruit, the glucose is fed into the sugar reflex in your brain and processes that sugar into energy and also tells your body that you dont need to crave because you have fed a need the body has wanted.  Now if you use any of these, Nutra-sweet, Splenda, Equal, or anything with Sucralose, Aspartame, Saccarin or any of the like what it does is sends a signal to the brain telling it that it has received its sugar fix, but after it has been processed the brain realizes that it has not received any sugar at all and thus goes into cravings because you promised it energy by eating a sugar like substance but really just tricked it.  So the brain will do what it takes to get energy and will make you crave food to help feed it a sugar to regulate its glucose levels and satisfy its energy fix.  I hope this helps in a layman terms.

It does help, but at the same time, as long as you can control your cravings, it seems like a perfectly fine supplement.  Diet sodas, on their own with no other thought to dieting, may not do much, but in a controlled diet, where cravings are suppressed and meals are healthy, they can be helpful.
