Celtics coach Doc Rivers keeps saying that he hasn't abandoned hope of trying to convince P.J. Brown to come out of retirement for one more half-season of work.

So Doc will undoubtedly be encouraged to hear that Brown is not "officially retired," even though that's how the 39-year-old described himself in a recent interview with the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The only way to officially retire is to send a retirement letter to the league office. But Brown hasn't done that, probably because the concept of players filling out formal paperwork when they decide to retire is a bit of an NBA myth.

You often hear and read about such retirement letters, but the league this week clarified that a player leaving the game with guaranteed money still on his contract is the only scenario that requires players to submit such a letter, which usually occurs in conjunction with some sort of injury-forced departure from the game.

Neither Brown nor Miami's Alonzo Mourning, who announced this week that he's not coming back to the Heat, left their teams with money still owed

It looks like Doc hasn't given up hope of signing PJ, but it is still unlikely. Hopefully PJ gets the itch to possibly win another championship in the next few months .

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but there are literally dozens and dozens of players who aren't "officially retired" who haven't played in the NBA in years.  I don't think this news means a lot, although I'd like to see P.J. come back.

It's not going to happen, guys. PJ is done. He played well last year, he got his ring, but he's done.

i actually disagree, i want him for the playoffs but i'd like Baby to keep getting minutes, so that when we get to final stretch we'll have all the help we can get.

If Mike Brown and Ron Jeremy - I mean, Stan Van Gundy - would read this blog, they'd swell up with hope every time someone suggests that the current roster is good enough for a Celtics repeat. Because they - like some of us - know that it isn't.

It'd be great if PJ wasn't officially retired - but I doubt that. Doesn't change the fact that we MUST have length in a quality backup 5 if we have ANY hope of repeating. We cannot make it through the Eastern Conference playing Baby and Powe at the 5, and we cannot ask the Ticket for extended minutes there, either.

You're so smart CoachBo...why can't we all be as smart as you?

Ron Jeremy's team doesn't have a chance against us even with the roster the way it is, Dwight Howard is awesome, but noone else on the team is worth commanded extended attention. They are a flash in the pan.

and as for the Cavaliers it isn't a big man that we need for them, its another wing player that can defend while paul can get his rest.
