You know, the fact that Ainge didn't sign Mutumbo is odd in a way, especially when Mutumbo said he would like to come to Boston. With no legit back up center, how do you "pass" on Mutumbo at this point?

He'd be a great defensive addition and a solid Vet presence to go along with KG and Perkins.

There is some chatter that the Celtics like someone else better ( I beleive even Mutumbo said there was someone else they liked better).

To me, this means Ainge already has his Vet big in his pocket ( there is already an agreement in place we don't know. This is my feeling. I think either PJ is coming back one more time and they want him because he knows the system already or it's Mourning.

Why do you think they passed on Mutumbo and who do you think is coming in?...assuming for the sake of this thread that Ainge laready has someone in his pocket...

The only thing I can assume is that Danny wants a backup big who can spread the floor more than Mutombo.  I don't know if that player is out there.  Sure, Joe Smith and Nick Collison would both be good fits, but they're each under contract (and Joe Smith said recently that he doesn't want a buyout, and hasn't instructed his agent to inquire about one.)

exaclty my thought re spreading the floor or Mutumbo cloggin the lane. The better fit would be either PJ or Mourning, both of whom won at at least decent mid range jump shots. I still think PJ would come back for one more run only if the big three guys said they needed him to. They'd being calling in a favor...they helped get his last year, now they need him to help them this year...

I wouldn't be surprised at any of those possibilities. When I heard about Mutumbo coming back I was certain Celts would pick him up. But maybe theres some grand plan out there no one knows about yet. Or maybe we have PJ coming back.
"Sam Cassell was heckling on the sideline when I walked down, He looked at me and was like, ‘You're getting the ball, I know you're getting the ball!'
said Allen.

And did Cassell, a man of many words, have anything to say after that?

"No, I told him he needed to wear a tie."

While i think it is partly about spreading the floor, I think it is more about have another 2-way player.  They already have enough bench guys who have major holes in their game.  I think Danny was thinking that if he is going to bring in another guy with a hole in his game (like Mutombo has on offense), he is going to wait until he has explored all other avenues.

I strongly believe that Mutombo is not a significantly better defensive player than Davis, against all but a couple teams (although one of those teams is the Lakers), and Davis is actually a better offensive player.

Perhaps he is overplaying his hand, but I think Danny is right to wait it out, and hope an actual 6th man comes available, rather than another 9th or 10th man.  Because really, lets face it, Mutombo was never going to be the difference between winning the championship or not.

I really hope the player Danny had in mind for filling that role wasn't Patrick O'Bryant. That would be very disturbing.

i think there are two possible reasons:

1- ainge has something in the works already
2- he is targeting someone he feels is better suited for our team

While I like the idea of a guy like Mutumbo, I would love to see an offensive force that is more reliable coming off the bench. Low post scoring or mid range jumper, I dont care. Of the guys mentioned, Mourning and PJ can both score. Having some legitimate post length offensively is just as important to me as it is defensively.

Danny is a sneaky rascal, I agree he likely has something in the works. ;D

I'm just kind of sitting here with my fingers crossed, hoping that Danny isn't just some ... hack who got lucky with a couple big trades.

I try to reassure myself by saying that he engineered the Rondo pick up... but it just doesn't do the trick. I don't know why.

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Not sure that was necessary.

What does his religious beliefs have to do with anything?
