Is there any chance that Danny signed Cassell just so they would have the 1.2 million dollar slot to use in a trade. Personally, I think so.  No one is gonna want Cassell, they can trade him and have him back in 30 days and I am willing to bet that he will in fact be part of a deal.

It's a possibility.

No. If so, his contract wouldn't be guaranteed.

Plus they like Sam too much as a coach and maybe as a player - who knows? - to mess him around like that.

But maybe it was prearranged, that he might be "messed around with" assuming it's in the best interest of the Celtics franchise? And that if he agreed to that possibility, he could sign?

If it was pre-arranged, why would they guarantee his contract? I'm pretty sure Cassell wouldn't be opposed to a situation like this, but it wasn't the reason why he was signed.

Wouldn't they have given him more money if that was the plan?

Not if they wanted to conserve their remaining MLE and LLE allowances to make a free-agent signing down the line.

I believe Sam has a trade clause in his contract so he can't be traded to a team he doesn't want to go to. Besides the Celtics aren't going to trade him.  The plan has always been to bring Sam along the final month or two of the season and then for the playoffs.

No chance.  Cassell was signed, because they thought he could help them as a point guard, either as an insurance policy, or as a guy who will step in late in the year.
