There's a report this morning in Yahoo Sports that Marion may go to Toronto for JO. If this happens, will the Heat still sign Zo? I believe the answer is yes, but thought i'd toss it out there for discussion....

That would be great to get a healthy Zo but I can't believe Miami would trade for O'Neal.  He's washed up and has a couple more years on his deal.  His last two teams appear to play better when he is not playing due to injury- which is very often.

No, I don't think so. The Heat would still need a backup center ... basically similar minutes for Alonzo either way.

and No we're not getting ZO

This Trade Succeeded! Go back to adjust your trade or start over.
Toronto Raptors

Incoming Players
 Shawn Marion
Salary: $17,810,000  Years Remaining: 1
PTS: 12.1  REB: 9.2  AST: 1.9  PER: 15.70

 Marcus Banks
Salary: $4,260,000  Years Remaining: 3
PTS: 2.8  REB: 1.0  AST: 1.5  PER: 9.28

Miami Heat

Incoming Players
 Jermaine O'Neal
Salary: $21,372,000  Years Remaining: 1
PTS: 13.6  REB: 7.2  AST: 1.6  PER: 16.24

Interesting trade possibility.  I think it makes Toronto better this year but I am not so sure about Miami.  Miami does seem to like to stock pile under-achieving big men so maybe they do it but I can't imagine they would get their $20M worth out of O'Neil this year or next.  Perhaps a good complement for D-Wade's game and he is definitely redundant with Bosh so O'Neil's numbers would go up in Miami I think.

This trade makes a little sense, but this whole thing breaks down when you look at the fact that they will be losing their cap space this summer if they make this trade, which likely takes them out of the running for Boozer.

Of course it does set them up nicely to go after one of the big names in 2010, and try to lure them to South Beach.  So maybe that is actually their plan.

The word is that Miami is stockpiling for 2010, regardless.  With or without Wade, Miami has a *lot* of advantages to offer that other free agent destinations can't provide (nightlife, no income tax, weather), since the money being thrown at the big players will all be pretty similar.

Interesting.  That is different than what the rumors were earlier in the season (that Boozer was basically a lock to come there this summer).

It makes sense though.  I can imagine there will be a lot of guys who would love to go there in 2010.  Wade and Bosh would be a very nice combo to build around.

Why would they lose their cap space?  If anything, they are increasing it (since O'Neil has a larger expirering contact)

It makes sense to me.  O'Neal gives them an upgrade at C and the loss of Marion gives more time to Beasley

As for the Raptors, O'Neal/Bosh combo doesn't work.  They now get a tryout of the Bosh/Marion combo as well as saving a place for Bargnani to continue to start.

Basically, it looks like two teams that seem to understand that they are not likely title contenders this year and are going to experiment and create time for their young players.

Isn't there still some concern about Boozer's knee?  It must have been the article on Yahoo! that was talking about this; they were specifically talking about Miami wanting to see if JO was healthy before pulling the trigger (don't hold your breath), but also mentioned in passing concerns about Boozer that seemed more long-term in nature.

I agree, Bosh/Wade (and maybe Beasley) would be a dyn-o-mite combination.  Still need a center and a point, but that team would be a lot of fun to watch and could make some real noise.

O'Neal contract runs until 2010; Marion is an expiring.

Anyway, I don't think they have enough cap room, as things stand now, to go after Boozer this off-season. If they're having trouble to find decent deals that allow them to dump salaries, better go for O'Neal and fight for the FA in 2010.

Answering the titular question: no, Miami will keep Zo.

The whole Boozer thing is a good point.  If they want and think they can get Boozer next year, they definitely don't do this trade but maybe they are starting to think Boozer's knees are even worse than O'Neil's and would rather wait for the 10/11 FA class to see what they can get.  I would be pretty suspicious of dealing with Boozer after the crap he pulled getting out of Cleveland.  My guess is he continues to rest until the last few weeks of the season and then puts up huge numbers for a couple of weeks, suckers someone into big money and then limps though the majority of the rest of his career.  I just don't trust him.

Anything that prevents Cleveland from getting Marion is good news. Unless Cleveland is a 3rd team in the trade.

Really?   I was just looking at the checker above that says both had one year left.  Bad info coming from the trade machine?
