Agreed.  I think Youk might have been playing over his head a bit (even though I still think he is real good), but I think Pedroia is the real deal.  But what do I know?

Its not because he is older, it is because he is arbitration eligible, and therefore closer to free agency.

Pedroia was not arbitration eligible for another couple of years I believe, which means it was a MAJOR raise in his new contract.

I actually think when you look at the money they were set to make over the term of their contract, if they had gone year to year, Youk's would end up being a much bigger bargain than Pedroia's, since the Sox gave up a couple of non-arbitration years with Dustin.

Awesome. I'm guessing that this isn't a four year extension beyond his last two arb years, and that it ends after 2012. Is it a club or player option?

Edit: It's a club option to bring him back in 2013 for 13 million.

the difference also between pedroia and youk is that 1b make more then 2b.  so when they are doing comparative deals, youks is in line with 1b like him (although his numbers were better then texiera last year, tex is one year younger and youk is getting 4 years and 140 million less).

youk is also alot more valuable becuase he can play 1st 3rd and some outfield (only a couple times on that one)

Yup, and position has a lot to do with arbitration, since their salary is generally calculated based on what other players of their position make.
