if clay is the price then no, which could very well be why this has gone nowhere.

http://blogs.weei.com/robbradford/2009/01/25/deadline-for-varitek/

WEEI gives specific years and money.

$5 million in year one, with a club option for year 2 worth $5 million, and a player option for year 2 worth $3 million.

It's a good deal for both sides.  Sox are 'overpaying' but not so grossly that there should be a problem.  Tek is making more then he would likely get as an unrestricted FA.

Will be very interested to see what Boras and co do.

Though I'd rather have Miguel Montero and Josh Bard as my two catches, I suppose I can deal with Tek for another year.  I don't expect the Sox to pick up that option for the second year and expect Varitek to try free agency to get more then 3 mil.  So I wouldn't be surprised if this is only one year.
do it

It's amazing that people 'from Tek's camp' are suggesting that he may sit out the year to try and get a better deal.  That is laughably stupid.

no team in their right mind would offer him 5 million for a season.  despite the fact that we didnt need to, we made what would represent the highest offer for him whether there were draft picks on the line or not.

If Tek and Boras dont accept the offer, then they are both fairly stupid.

Yup.  I just heard Sean McAdams say that Varitek might be pondering retirement rather than take the Sox' offer.  Definitely ego.

Nothing personal against him, but he's an automatic out. Let him go.
Anyone remember Jack Clark's days with the Sox? He just stood there and took third strikes all season- well Varitek didn't take strike three, he swung and missed, but the results were the same. Awful, painful to watch.
He had a good career, offer him a couple of million, if he refuses it, say goodbye.

Jack Clark is my least favorite Red Sox of all time.

I'd take Jack Clark over Tony Clark.  Tony had great defense at 1B, but hit worse than most pitchers.  Went from 20-30 HRs a year to three, a ~.280 batter to the Mendoza line...  good defense at first base, but absolutely no bat at all.

The Yankees dont need Varitek they already have a better backup catcher in Jose Molina.

i was really hoping varitek was gonna end up on the yankees to prove the sox/yankees rivalry is a myth.
