It really depends on the contract that another team is willing to throw at Cassel.

I think he is gone next year.

I really grew to Like cassel, and It's shame Brady won his first superbowl with an 11-5 team and cassel wont get that oppurtunity...Im also not so sure on tom and obviously cassel has more years in his prime left than brady

How about both. If Brady is able to perform to his level I think he will be playing. If not I think Cassel will. The Pats really do control the situation and can have their cake and eat it too. But it just might cost them some other players. The salary cap ramifications more than anything else will decide what happens and that includes the status of brady's knee. Money we can spend and not Brady's knee will determine what happens this off season.

There is no comparison between the two. Cassel is very good, but Brady is one of the best whose ever lived. Keeping Cassel around will be understandable if they're not confident about Brady being ready for week 1, but once they know Brady will be able to play then they should trade Cassel immediately. You can't have a backup quarterback earning what Cassel is going to make next year. So if Brady is ready to go, even if they think he'll take a while to get back to being Tom Brady, they should go with Brady, and there shouldn't be any debate about it.

Since when is having two excellent quarterbacks a "quagmire?"

Sorry, was working in a clever Q word for the title.  I guess "question" would have sufficed.

I guess I'd be the guy coming up with headlines for the Daily News sooner than the Times.

But the questionable quagmire is the timing of them having to make a decision on Cassel and I wonder what level of confidence they need to have in Brady's health before making the decision to let Cassel go.

Right now, i think its a touch and go thing because of Brady's health.  If Brady's rehab is way behind (according to Tom Curran), then you might actually see the franchise tag thrown at Cassel.  The team bites the bullet for a season, salary cap wise.

However, if Brady is fine, then you might see the Pats try and negotiate with Cassel on a contract under the presumption that they'll trade him (This might have to be one of those wink jobs).  Best case scenerio (from a Pats standpoint) is sign him and turn around and trade him for a 1st and 3rd or something even better.

Hey, I thought I was the clever Q! >-:

I guess that is the 64 million dollar question. How is Brady's knee? The Patriots are on top of this situation and this question will answer itself by March.

I don't see how this is a quagmire.  Its really pretty simple.  Brady is your starter.  You franchise Cassel, and you trade him unless you are absolutely possitive Brady will not be ready to return.

Often time you do hear that injuries like Brady's take longer than a year to heal.  This happened with McNabb in Philadelphia.  However, unlike McNabb, Brady's mobility was never part of his greatness.  As long as his leg is stable and he can drop back effectively, I don't see why he can't be very effective at the beginning of next year and even more effective as the year goes on.

As for Cassel, I'm very skeptical.  I think some people don't understand how rare it is for a Bledsoe/Brady scenario to happen.  Yes, Brady emerged out of the shadows of a (borderline) Pro Bowl quarterback to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but that stuff doesn't happen everyday.  The chances of Cassel becoming 1/2 of what Brady ever was are very small.  I've lived in Philadelphia the past 15 years and I've seen Eagles fans get swept up in the backup quarterback flavor of the week every time McNabb went down.  Every year fans thought guys like Ty Detmer, Koy Detmer, and A.J. Feeley were going to be great quarterbacks.  However, after decent seasons where the opposition didn't take them seriously, these guys started to get figured out and stopped.  Just ask the Dolphins how Feeley worked out for them after they signed him away from the Eagles.

Cassel was good, but let's not forget that a lot of that is a product of the system and a product of having sensational wide receivers.  Remember that Brady's numbers went up enormously last year when he had Moss, Welker, etc. to throw to.  Let's also remember, that with the same receiving core Brady threw for 29 more TDs, 1200 more yards, 13 less interceptions, and a nearly a 30 point higher passer rating.

Cassel may be good, but he's most likely not going to be special.  The best thing the Pats can do is try to convince some other team he is and get something for him.

How much cap space do the Pats have right now?  The salary cap hold is what's got to scare them.  Would they have to cut some guys that they really want to keep in order to franchise Cassel, or would it basically be a matter of them not being able to sign anybody until Cassel gets traded?

I found this site.

http://www.patscap.com/

Apparently they will be roughly 19 million under the cap for 2009(49 signed players) from what this site says.  If that is true it could be enough to hold onto both QBs if they want next season and still be able to sign some draft picks/free agents at a low cost.  I'm no expert on this but that is what the numbers show me.
