I admit to being and old-school white guy but I don't get the trash talking and finger-waving.  I can't see Bill Russell doing either.  They are champions and are supposed to carry themselves as if they have been there before.

I don't like finger-waving, I don't like touchdown dances, and I didn't like the way Manny acted after homeruns.  And now, I don't like that the Celtics are getting a rep as trash-talkers.  They are the champs, what do they need to trash talk for?

I just don't get it.

did you have the same opnion when bird, mchale, and angie were doing it? they were known as some of the most brutal trash talkers around (esp. bird.)

not trying to be a smartass, just wondering.

Sam Jones was a notorious trash-talker as well.

Alright, Iggy might not be a scrub, but he isnt much more than a scrub IMO..

To follow guava's line of thinking, that's absolutely unfair.  He's off to a rough start this year - just like his entire team - but this is a guy who averaged nearly a 20-5-5 a year ago on 54 percent true shooting.  Plays defense and gives you super-athleticism at two positions.  And the truth is that I'm probably lower on him than most.  But "not much more than a scrub" isn't accurate.

his problem is he's not a half court player, at all.

He needs a transistion orenited team. Brand's style of play, and adopting to it, will kill him.

He should demand a trade to the knicks so he can play under mikey D. would be his dream job.

There is yapping and there is talking.  Sometimes a little talking can get inside your opponents head.  I considered that what Bird did.  Yapping is just yapping and what these guys are doing is starting to be yapping and I would rather not see it, no matter who may have done it in the past.  I would rather see these guys focused on winning and nothing else.

forgive me, but that sounds liek a pretty thin and convient cop out to place bird and his teams on one side and the current celtics on the other of this line between trash talking being uncalled for or "yapping".

Most people say Bird was a giant you-know-what on the court to the opposing team. what exactly makes what that team did any diffrent than what jordan's bulls did or what we are doign now other than personal nostalgia?

and again, just to be clear, i support the chatty cathy's, trash talking is fun and adds to the flavor of a game, but i can't get behind some arbitrary distinction that for one specfic player/team it was gamesmanship and ok as opposed to what's going on now in the league being diffrent.

Guys have always talked trash, from pick up teams to Pro's,  espically good teams. These guys are the best in the world at what they do, and basketball is a talkitive, competitive game.

TP dark, beat me to it.

I know that it is very subjective and everyone is going to have a different idea of what is getting inside the opponent's head and what is trash or yapping.  I think most people will understand the concept of a difference though.  I don't think it is a Black-White thing as I think a previous poster was eluding to by referencing Bird and McHale and why it didn't bother me when they did it.  My role model for this is Bill Russell, not Larry Bird.

Eddie House was like 2-7 the other night I think against Phili and after making a shot, he heckled the Phili bench.  Please.  We don't need that kind of thing and it appears to be happening because our leaders (PP KG) are setting the tone.

TP to VG - I agree with you and feel the same way.  To be fair to the leadership, though, House has always done that (which is why I disliked him prior to his signing with the team).

Otherwise, I think you're spot on, and that AI's comments are accurate.  People (NBA Players) just see the Celtics who do this as whiny and lame, not intimidating.
God bless and good night!

I think other teams don't like it because they are not good enough to beat the Celtics and they are bitter about it. After the game they are pouting. LOL

This might be a strange theory, but I wonder if the reason we see so much more trash talking is because of the improvements in TV technology.  Between HD picture and sound, and tons of additional camera angles, Mic'd Up, etc., we are able to see and hear so much more.  Maybe there was just as much talk going on before, we just couldn't see or hear it.   Just a theory...

As for KG and the Celtics, I love KG as a player, but I am not a huge fan of his theatrics on the court.  I know he is intense, but too often he reaches the point where he comes off as someone just trying to draw attention to himself.  To me, there is talking and then there is showing up the other team, and he does that A LOT.

i hated the theatrics last year when kg was avoiding the post. as long as he backs up the chest thumping with aggressive post play(whether he succeeds at it or not) i LOVE the theatrics.

I don't see the relevance of being white. I also don't see the relevance of being old school. How is trash talking a new thing?

There's trash talking almost everywhere in sports.  Hell there is trash talking down at my local YMCA.  People/players complaining about the Celtic team trash talking is just funny to me.  Who cares, you're a grown man, if you're that mentally weak to let it bother you, then you shouldn't be on the court.  Let's face it, the only reason we're getting crap is because everyone outside the New England/Boston area hates Boston teams/fans.  The Wizards talked a ton of smack the past few seasons and I never once heard anything about them in the media.
