not too upset, i want PJ back anyways...

although, now that i think of it, i'd love to listen to Dickerson attempt to conduct a post-game interview with Deke.

I read in an interview a few years ago that Deke did not like Boston because of the cold winters. I was hoping a chance to win a ring was enough to warm him up to the idea of playing for the Celtics. :(

[dang]... he would have been a great signing. I'm afraid PJ opts to stay in Louisiana this time even if he comes back and that Joe Smith, if bought out, goes back to Cleveland.

Just heard on weei radio,"the Celtics showed interest in Mutombo but he plans to sign with Houston after Xmas".

Was that supposed to be a quote from Doc?  Doc was on WEEI this morning and confirmed their interest.  He BELIEVES Mutombo will sign with elsewhere, but he didn't say who or that it was definite that he would sign with someone else.  It appeared from what Doc was saying that the Celtics think Mutomobo is too limited offensively to fit in their system.  Not sure I agree with that though.

I thought Doc might have just been blowing smoke and I still think we might land Mutombo if the Celtics are truly interested.  Didn't Mutombo say that Houston has ignored his request to return to their team?

That's complete bull. I hate those misinterpreted taglines. They must've based this statement on this article:

Quote
Coach Doc Rivers confirmed yesterday the Celtics were interested in free agent center Dikembe Mutombo.

But he predicted Mutombo would return to Houston.

That's right, Doc said before this season that he thinks Mutombo will go to Houston. But how about that (from another article):

Quote
The four-time Defensive Player of the Year said among the teams that have shown interest are Boston, San Antonio, and Miami. The former Rocket also said Houston has "not answered me."

And if you read a little further in the first article:

Quote
"I told [Affleck] that I might play in his hometown," Mutombo said in a telephone interview. "He said, 'Come, we'd love to have you.' He's a really nice guy."

[...]

"My agent, David Falk, has talked to the Celtics," he said. "I'm also getting interest from other teams to contribute on [the floor] and on the bench as a mentor."

So where exactly does it say Mutombo will sign with Houston?

I was reading ESPN insider and Houston had to cut some cap space to ensure that they wouldn't go over into luxury tax. If they can't the GM said they would not resign Mutombo, anyone else hear about this.

Yes, Dino, it appears you have it right.

Quote from: Houston Chronicle
[Rocket's owner Leslie] Alexander said the luxury tax threshold of $71.15 million is in effect a hard cap for the Rockets, with the exception of any opportunity to land “a great, great player.”

“I love Dikembe. I love him as a player and as a person,” he said. “He’s a terrific guy and a good player, but he’s not a great, great player anymore.”

Though the Rockets would only have to pay Mutombo about $536,000 (a prorated portion of his veteran’s minimum salary), if signing Mutombo triggered the luxury tax, he would likely cost between $5 million and $7 million in salary, tax and lost shared revenue.

Seems likely that this, more than Mutombo's decline, is the reason he's a long shot to resign with Houston. $5 million is understandably too much to pay out for Deke at this point in his career. And while I'm on the subject, let me add, I'm not much interested in bringing him to Boston, one assistant coach on the roster is enough.

Can't sign him until after the 25th. But aside from PJ, I will welcome with open arms the 65 year old Senior citizen Center.

Remember Barkley always said he lies big time about his age. But I don't care, just do what you do with us. Bring that 7'2" frame under are basket and for once I won't mind him waiving that finger around.
