Tanguay is indeed not suited for Play-by-Play commentating and no we the TV viewers should not be listening to him when we have the best Play-by-Play radio commentator in the league today in Sean Grande.

Give Sean a break and put the man on TV' he's too talented for radio alone.

Grande & Tommy (Max helping sidelines with dickerson)

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I've actually always been a big fan of Tanguay on NEST, but I tend to agree with some of the negative comments you guys have posted. Obviously he is no Gorman, but because of my familiarity with him in studio, I am okay with him doing the games. It would be nice if he didn't go crazy over a 2nd quarter lay-up and had fewer mistakes, but we should also give him a break. If Gorman isn't going to be there, you can do a whole lot worse than Tanguay.

On a similar note, moving Grande to television after Gorman retires would definitely be the best option. I guess I would also rather have Max over Marshall, too- but not crazy about either. Hey, at least the Celtics are winning and that's the only thing that really matters in the end.

Obviously I don't watch every team's games so I can't say for sure who I'd pick over him, but I think it's safe to say he was about as bad as someone could've possibly been last night.

It literally seemed every other play he messed something up, whether it was the call, the player whose foul it was, etc.

I just am not convinced there's much worse than that.

I'll start by saying I don't think Comcast has Tanguay in it's plans as the long term replacement for Mike Gorman.  I sure hope not.  I recognize that being asked to call an NBA basketball game can be daunting.  But if he's going to be Mike's backup then he really needs to work on a few things.  You don't need to be Mike Gorman, but you need to be... I don't know... not annoying.

So To Tanguay:

1.  It's not necessary to fake an uncontrollable laugh whenever Tommy tries to make a joke.  Mike will often just let it hang out there for a bit.  Let it marinate before moving on.  Let it stand on it's own.  We don't need the laugh track.

2.  When a player has 3 fouls in the 4th quarter he is not in foul trouble.  Let me break this out for you... 2 fouls in the first quarter or early in the second could be foul trouble.  3 fouls in the first half is foul trouble.  4 fouls in the 3rd is foul trouble.  5 fouls in the 4th if foul trouble.  Obviously, there's a bit of a sliding scale for time left in the quarter and they type of player.  But please don't tell me a guy is in foul trouble because he just committed his 3rd foul with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

3.  Don't EVER count down the shot clock again.  You can remind us there 7 seconds on the clock... and yes, I suppose you can call it the Amica shot clock as you and Mike are surely instructed to do... but once you do that, assume we know where to look for that clock on the screen or that we have our own internal countdowns.  Please don't ever subject me to another "Six, five...".

4.  Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk.  I don't remember where that tag line comes from, but it's appropriate here.  Your excitement is often a day late and about 3 dollars too much.

5.  In all but rare instances, leave the officiating to Tommy.  He does enough of it.  As with his jokes, it's best to let him say his peace and then move on.

6.  Learn when TV timeouts are taken and how to signify this to viewers.  Mike uses "time out on the floor" or "we're going to get ourselves a timeout."  You often mix up TV timeouts and real timeouts.  TV timeouts are under 6, under 3 of every quarter.  And under 9 of the 2nd and 4th.  When utah calls a timeout with 10:20 left in the quarter, that's not a TV timeout.

7.  You have some good stats.  But let them come out in the flow of the game.  Right now it's almost like you see Milsap do something, call it, and then tack the statistic on as an after thought.  Work it into the call.

Anyway, I'm glad Mike is back on Wednesday.

Eek - glad I was at the game.  TP for you, pretty funny recap of the ever-increasingly annoying Tanguay.

Let him and Felger stick to football, please.
God bless and good night!

First let me say that I am very grateful that the worst thing about this team is the play by play guy, but MY GOD he is awful. To be honest, I'm one of those guys who hardly ever notices whos doing games, but this guy yelling at every lay up was making me nuts. Guys in the NBA are suposed to make lay ups. Every rebound, every shot, sounded like they had just won the championship. I hate to be this negitive, but that was simply one of the worst jobs I have ever had the misfortune to listen to.

TP, 3 was by far the most attrocious.  I'd add in commandment 8 as

8 ) it is not nesscary for you to use any of the following phrases after you think you've made a funny/ good point and want backup; Right Tommy? Thoughts tommy? Tommy? what do you think tommy? Do you see it that way tommy?

If tommy wants to give you a head pat, he will do so, don't ask for it.

I see that the "PERK IS A MAN!" moment has already been mentioned.  My other favorite was when he told us that...  "GABE PRUIT HAS ICE WATER IN HIS VEINS!"

When he hit a 3 with 9 minutes left in the 4th...

Really?

If we're picking our favorite Tanguay moment, I'll going with when he was running down Rondo's stats after the game and said he was "Money at the free throw line". While 11-15 isn't terrible, I don't think 73% quailifies as Money either.

Ok I'm with you on that one.  The "Gabe Pruit has ice water in his veins!" comment was retarded.

Crownsy, "You're so money and you don't even know it". (TP to the first one that tells me where that line is from)

Well, this might come as shock but I enjoyed Tang's commentating.

I liked it when he said something about Big Baby's "Beef".

Also, "you're so money".... everyone should know where that line is from!
