Quote
The Philadelphia 76ers fired coach Maurice Cheeks on Saturday, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

Assistant general manager Tony DiLeo will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, the sources said.

Cheeks' deal with the 76ers, who started the season 9-14, was guaranteed through next season.

Not surprised at all. Everybody expected them to be top 4 in the East. They've definitely underachieved so far this season.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

Yeah. They shocked everybody last year by playing so well. I thought Cheeks had a very good chance of winning coach of the year this season.

So now we get to find out if it was Brand or the coach who was to blame?

So far Brand has been a "careful what you wish for" situation.  It's hard top believe that team can be worse with him.

Talk about a knee jerk reaction.  Mo Cheeks consistently overachieves with teams, as he did last season.  They bring in a new cornerstone to the team that plays a completely different style from what made the team succesful last year (half court vs. fast paced)... and then fire him about 1/4 of the way into the season because the team isn't doing well?

I really hope this shoots them in the foot.  If Mo Cheeks wants a job you know he'll have on by next season.

This firing makes no sense at all. Why would you fire a coach who usually gets the most out of his team when the reason for their slow start is the transition from a running team to a half court offense to accommodate a half-court player? I'm pretty baffled. Wouldn't you at least want some continuity? At least give the guy some time to allow that team to try and figure it out.

Because that's what everyone else does when their team starts slowly.

I don't think Cheeks has ever been that great a coach in Philly.  The team played well towards the end of the year last season, but in four years in Philly, his teams have never finished above .500.  Watching the Sixers play over the past several seasons (they're my "local" team here in southern NJ), the team has consistently looked disorganized and has played with very little energy, with the exception of immediately after they traded AI and last season.

With the talent the team now has, you'd expect the coach to be able to get better results.  Yes, they need more shooters, but Cheeks just hasn't made any adjustments to his offense at all.  I'm glad he's gone, so that hopefully the Sixers will be watchable again.

Cheeks deserved to be fired. Good decision.

Anyone know anything about the interim head coach? Or are they signing a new head coach sometime soon?

Their assistant GM, Tony Dileo, is going to be their interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Heh, Dileo coached in Europe in the late 80s. I had no idea he was still alive and kicking.

Cheeks was fired because none of his starters developed a long-ranged jumper in the Summer?

I didn't think about it at first, that that's completely true.  The same problem that really limited the team last year is limiting them this year.  And it's pretty hard for anyone to just create a shot in one summer, no matter who coaches them.

I checked 2 other sources when I found out the source was steven i smith.  Nothing he says is believable...Or accurate.  Too bad he's right on this.  Cheeks is one of the league's good guys.  But this team appears to be poorly coached, listless, and disorganized.

I thought this Sixers team had a shot at a 2-seed.  I still think they're a formidable playoff team.  They should have a great defensive front line.
