  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
Let me preface this with my personal story.  I started a job about 4 months ago in downtown Indianapolis.  This is the first year I've lived in a city with an NBA team (I grew up in RI, so I only got to go to a few Celts games).  It's also the first year I've actually had a salary and lived like an adult rather than a poor as hell student.

To celebrate this, I bought 2 Pacers half season tickets.  I figured that with Bird running the team, the new look Pacers were doing all the right things (getting rid of the bad apples, stockpiling young talent) and would be worth the investment (especially with the Celtics playing here for the home opener).  So far it's been pretty great, I've gotten to go to about 5 games so far and I'm using my extra ticket to take co-workers in an effort to suck up and get to know people outside the office setting.  It's also entitled me to lots of free beer bought by grateful coworkers, but that's beside the point.

However, on weeknight games, I'm generally at the fieldhouse in my work clothes - shirt, tie, and sometimes suit.  Generally I have despised the fans that would do this in Boston, Cleveland, or Memphis, but for me it's become a thing of necessity - I don't have time to go home after work, especially when I can just walk directly to the game.  I've found that dressing up also makes sneaking down into courtside seats considerably easier (my current seats are in the 1st row of the balcony, which isn't bad, but the Pacers attendance numbers are low and the lower bowl is consistently 70% full).

But, does wearing a suit make you less of a fan?  I guess it's a moot point for me because I'm not necessarily a Pacers fan (although I'll support them if they're not playing the Celtics).  If it's a weekend game, I'll throw on a Rik Smits jersey (another issue...does wearing the Smits jersey make me less of a Celtics fan?  I maintain that I'm doing it to preserve the dunking Dutchman's memory), and when the Celtics are in town, it's always going to be my McCarty jersey.  Let me restate that the Celtics always come first in the NBA, and that going to these games presents no conflict of interest for me - it's like being a Red Sox fan while living in Pittsburgh and going to Pirates games.

So I guess I'm just reaching out for opinions.  If me from 5 years ago had the chance to see me at an NBA game in a suit, sipping on a $6 beer, I would have called future me a Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.bag (side note, past me would have been drinking Karkov out of a Gatorade bottle on the T to prepare for the game).  Now, I'm ok with it since it's a matter of necessity.  What do you guys think?  At first glance, am I a fan, or just a prick?

CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

Yes.  It's ok.

It's what's inside the suit that counts.

Someone may stereotype you a certain way I guess, but others might do the same for the way you cut your hair, or the sneakers you wear or whatever.

If you're a fan you're a fan.
Yup

The thing is you know you're a fan and you wear what you wear because you're coming straight from work.  Other people will think differently until they're in the situation you're in right now.  So you can't worry about the other people.

But, can you bring a change of clothes to work and change there then walk to the game then after the game walk back and pick up your work clothes?

Right.  You might be judged before the game starts, but as soon as you start fist pumping and high fiving and giving standing O's the real fans will recognize you as being one of the family.

The only time I've been dressed up at a game was the Pierce/LeBron Game last year because it was after my sister's law school graduation.  I was a little worried at first, but I was so fired up for that game and was going nuts from the national anthem on so i fit in well.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

I guess it all just depends on what type of "suit" fan you are...

I don't know about the suit, but that guy reminds me of the guy who was dancing to Bon Jovi on Monday night (anyone at the game knows exactly who I am talking about).

Well, at the same time, I'm not a huge Pacers fan.  I'm more there for the love of the game than the love of the team.  So if Roy Hibbert gets viciously blocked by Sam Dalembert, I'm going to applaud the great play rather than sulk.  I wouldn't be obnoxious about it, and if the Pacers are down 3 with possession and under a minute to play, I'm going to be standing and yelling.

I'd say I cheer about as much as the normal fan there, but no one's too excited about the season yet.  Sadly, this year Conseco is one of the more quiet arenas I've been to.  Still, does this make me seem like the corporate fan that's helping to price out the die hard fans from watching games live?

Again, it depends on the individual.  I think the fact that you're a frequent contributor on a pro sports based blog it's safe to say that you are a knowledgeable and enthusiastic fan.

There are a few corporate type people out there who are indeed legit fans as well.
Yup

Wait, the Pirates are still an MLB franchise and have fans that go to their park? Wow!! Learn something new everyday!!

Yes.  It's ok.

As in, ripping it off and revealing a Superman logo?

I think it's fine, does it matter what other people think? Plus, it's not like you're a Pacers fan anyway.

Don't sweat what other people think, life is too short to worry about what they think because you have a suit on. What matters is what you think. And if during the game you think it will help you get better seats and that afterward it will help you score a little 20 year old socialite sitting in the big bucks seats with daddy, then wear the suit. Who cares what they think.

But beware. Don't go spilling any of those free beers on the suits. Dry cleaning is expensive.

Who cares if you wear a suit, if you watch and follow the game passionately, that's all that matters. While I can't offer any solutions for a non C's Pacer's game, if it is a game involving the Celtics, here is your solution.
